Are All the ‘Worst States to Live in’ Really Red?
The past week was a particularly bad one for the left-leaning media and for agenda-driven journalism in general.
Legacy Media: One Fail After Another
Leftmedia talkingheads are still grappling with the fact that hating Trump is not enough to keep and grow an audience.
CNBC Biased? You Don’t Say!
Question: What did Reince Priebus not know about CNBC — and when did he not know it? Priebus, chair of the Republican National Committee, sanctioned CNBC’s sponsorship of last week’s debate. When during and after the debate many of the candidates blasted the moderators for their bias, Priebus said that the moderators created a “hostile environment” and “it was one ‘gotcha’ question, one personal low blow after the other.”
Republicans vs. The Media
For years, I have been begging Republicans to stand up to the mainstream media. The left has dominated the media for as long as I’ve been alive. Yet Republicans have consistently granted leftists in media the patina of legitimacy: they’ve appeared on their programs, answered their questions without quibble, and allowed the audience to believe that the questions themselves spring from a place of objectivity rather than a desire to harm Republicans.
Long-Overdue Vigilance on Moderators
The competing Republicans presidential campaigns had a meeting on Nov. 1 to discuss their concerns with how the Republican National Committee had planned debates with the media. That’s a healthy development, considering the CNBC debate, in which liberal journalists asked one too many deliberately snide and hostile “gotcha” questions attacking the GOP candidates, and the candidates exploded in anger.
The Delusional Conceit of Harwoodian Liberal Journos
So CNBC’s John Harwood is not only unashamed of his disgracefully biased moderating of the GOP debate, he’s doubling down — entrenched as a five-year-old boy guarding his Halloween candy. After the debate he tweeted, “GOP debate in 2015 enriched my understanding of challenges @SpeakerBoehner has faced and @RepPaulRyan will face.” I assume he was not speaking complimentarily of these “challenges.”
The Fallout Continues
The fallout from Wednesday’s contentious CNBC debate continues. Politico reports that the Republican presidential candidates are taking matters into their own hands. Representatives from at least nine campaigns will be meeting in Washington, D.C., Sunday to discuss how they can force changes to the debate structure. No one from the Republican National Committee (RNC), which set up this process with the media, has been invited. The candidates’ frustrations run the gamut from the questioning to the reliance on national polls to determine who makes it into the prime time debates.
Primary Losers
Donald Trump did not dominate the debate stage in his usual way. Ben Carson may have put a few people to sleep. Former GOP heavyweight hopeful Jeb Bush was badly bloodied by the counter punches of Kid Rubio. Mike Huckabee and Carly Fiorina were lost in the crowd and held scoreless all night. John Kasich yelled too much and Rand Paul continued his slow disappearing act.
Hurray for CNBC
Jeb Bush’s campaign may be mortally wounded. Limping in the polls despite his massive war chest, he stooped (almost literally if you check the body language) to attacking Marco Rubio in an attempt to revive his fortunes. Rubio’s response, suggesting that Bush had been “told” to attack him, seemed like a bull’s-eye. Jeb Bush is an honorable man, a man raised to behave like a gentleman; but he was feeling desperate at Wednesday’s debate, and tried to play against type.
Speaker Ryan, Cruz & Rubio Score Big, the Biggest Loser
Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin became Speaker Ryan [Thursday] morning. In doing so, he becomes the youngest speaker of the House in nearly 150 years. He is now second in the line of presidential succession, behind Vice President Joe Biden. While I have concerns about some of Ryan’s positions, I will say this for the new leader of the House: Well-known for his devotion to policy solutions, Paul Ryan is one of his party’s most articulate spokesmen. There will be many contentious battles in the weeks and months ahead, and his ability to articulate a conservative vision for the country will be tested like never before.
The Man of the House
Plenty of important things happened in 1869 — Ulysses S. Grant was inaugurated, the first college football game was held, even *War and Peace* was published. It was also the last time America had a Speaker of the House as young as Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.). At 45, the Wisconsin dad won’t just be putting a new face on the GOP, but an energetic one. Of course, what the former VP candidate lacks in age, he more than makes up for in experience. As the Washington Post points out, he’s logged 6,143 days in the House (only 1,000 less than John Boehner) — and he’ll need every bit of that practice to help pull Republicans out of the mire they find themselves in.
Thank You, CNBC, for a Wonderful Evening
I dedicate the lead of this column to thanking CNBC for displaying its rank liberal bias in last night’s GOP presidential debate for all the world to see. In relative terms, “all the world” is not that far off if you consider last night’s audience size compared with the network’s usually paltry ratings. The more people who saw this charade from the network’s alleged moderators the better for America.
Biggest Loser in the CNBC Debate? The Media
It was, hands down, the most arresting moment of the Republican debate in Colorado. One of the CNBC moderators, Carl Quintanilla, asked Senator Ted Cruz whether his opposition to the just-announced congressional deal raising the federal debt limit demonstrates that he’s “not the kind of problem-solver American voters want.”
