Christmas may be gone, but Scrooge is still here! Much to our disappointment, Congress passed a massive funding bill before leaving town for Christmas that continued the taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood and the farce of the "Affordable" Care Act. When conservatives cried foul, Republicans pointed out they didn't have the 60 Senate votes they needed to end Americans' forced partnership with Planned Parenthood.

As night fell on Christmas Eve, National Public Radio was in its usual holy-day mode, using your tax dollars to mock the traditional Christian creed. This time they promoted an activist movie called "The Danish Girl," yet another alleged "true story" about artist Einar Wegener, a married man who wanted to be a woman named Lili. An earlier NPR commercial — sorry, "underwriting announcement" — said he was the first recipient of "gender confirmation surgery."

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Laws Threaten Freedom
America is dedicated to protecting the freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment to the Constitution, while respecting citizens' equality before the law. None of these freedoms is absolute. Compelling governmental interests can at times trump fundamental civil liberties, but sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) laws do not pass this test. Rather, they trample First Amendment rights and unnecessarily impinge on citizens' right to run their local schools, charities, and businesses in ways consistent with their values. SOGI laws do not protect equality before the law; instead, they grant special privileges that are enforceable against private actors.

Bullies Lose, Sanity Wins in Houston: There Will Be No Man Parts in the Ladies Room
The bullies lost. After a nearly 18-month slugfest, Houston's LGBT nondiscrimination ordinance was crushed in a landslide defeat Tuesday — rejected by 61 percent of voters. "The people of the city have spoken and they have spoken loudly," Houston pastor Steve Riggle told me. The nation's fourth largest city sent a clear message to City Hall: men who identify as women are not welcome in the ladies room.

There are disturbing reports in a leading Capitol Hill newspaper that the Obama Administration is, once again, looking for ways to circumvent Congress and ignore the courts. Using his pen and his phone, Obama is hoping to enact a radical climate change agreement through executive regulation, just like he did with the Iranian nuclear deal. In addition, leaked memos from the Department of Homeland Security indicate that the administration is preparing to ignore court orders that have so far frozen his executive amnesty efforts.

What Makes This Houston Ballot Measure So Threatening
On Tuesday, citizens of Houston, Texas, will go to the polls to vote on a controversial "sexual orientation and gender identity" (dubbed SOGI) measure. Rather than protecting equality before the law, the SOGI ordinance, euphemistically named the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), creates special legal protections based on "sexual orientation and gender identity." HERO, like all sexual orientation and gender identity laws, is bad public policy.
