Does Conservatism Matter in Republican Nomination Contest?
In December 2011, the candidate who led in the Iowa polls was not Rick Santorum (who ultimately squeaked out a victory there), nor Michelle Bachmann (who had driven Gov. Tim Pawlenty from the race by winning the Iowa straw poll earlier in the year), nor Mitt Romney. No, the leader was Ron Paul, with 23 percent.
Obama's Social Media Mishap
No, the president did not accidentally tweet an embarrassing photo. Regrettably, this is far more serious. Over the weekend, The New York Times reported that Tashfeen Malik "talked openly on social media about her views on violent jihad." "She said she supported it," the Times wrote. "And she said she wanted to be part of it." Yet as Malik sought entry into the United States, she ultimately passed three background checks. Not once did those posts raise any red flags ... because the Department of Homeland Security never checked her social media profile.
Terror Fears Rising
There are widely differing polls over whether Donald Trump is going too far with some of his latest remarks about Muslims and terrorism. But what the polls don't disagree on is that the American people are increasingly concerned about the threat we face from radical Islam. A new CBS News/New York Times poll finds that fears of terrorist attacks are at their highest levels since the days immediately following 9/11. Seventy-nine percent of Americans believe a terrorist attack is likely to occur in the next few months. Terrorism also beat out the economy as the top concern among Americans.
Farook's Friend
San Bernardino jihadist Syed Farook used two rifles in his murderous rampage that were purchased by a friend, Enrique Marquez. According to published reports, Marquez is expected to face charges in the ongoing investigation into last week's terrorist attack. As it turns out, Farook and Marquez are related by marriage, and Marquez told investigators that he and Farook had discussed plans for a terrorist attack in 2012.
Be Afraid ... of Obama
According to a new Fox News poll, 83% of Americans think it is likely that ISIS will attempt to attack America in the near future. President Obama's refusal to acknowledge and counter the threats facing the United States and Western Civilization is likely contributing to the fear and anxiety that Americans are feeling. There is less and less trust even in some corners of the left that Obama is capable or willing to steer the ship of state through these storm-filled waters.
House Rebukes Obama
Despite President Obama's veto threats, a bi-partisan, veto-proof majority of the House of Representatives voted yesterday to approve legislation demanding more security checks on refugees from Syria and Iraq. In a major rebuke to Obama, 47 House Democrats sided with the GOP majority in supporting this bill. Now consider this excerpt from the beltway publication The Hill: "The Obama administration's eleventh-hour bid to rally Democrats against Syrian refugee legislation backfired on Thursday... A number of Democrats who were on the fence about the bill decided to vote yes after hearing administration officials make the case against it."

There is a thought-provoking article [...] in The Wall Street Journal written by political commentator and analyst Michael Barone on the reliability of polls. ... Barone raises the real possibility that polls are increasingly flawed and unreliable. Just in the last week we saw polling in the Kentucky governor's race and the Houston battle over transgender men in ladies bathrooms that were way off from the final results. The Gallup polling organization is so worried that there is a flaw in modern polling techniques that it won't conduct presidential primary polls this cycle.
Imagining a World Without Polls
What if the polls just stopped working? Admittedly, this needs work as a plot device for a Stephen King novel. But for politics, it might be pretty awesome. This week, businessman Matt Bevin won a stunning upset in the Kentucky governor's race. It was only the second time in more than four decades that a Republican took the governor's mansion in the Bluegrass State. Bevin's margin of victory: nine percentage points.

During a press conference last week, President Obama said that Russia's Vladimir Putin was acting in Syria "not of strength, but out of weakness." If Mr. Putin gets any weaker, he may end up controlling the entire Middle East! Multiple reports today indicate that Putin has deployed shock troops known as the Spetsnaz into Syria. These troops are "extremely aggressive and highly trained."

There are many serious issues confronting our nation right now. But one of the most critical is the collapse of religious freedom in the world and the increasing persecution of Christians and Jews. Turning a Blind Eye, Muslim Mania, Poll Position
Just when you think you've heard everything, here comes an unbelievable story in the New York Times. It is a part of the culture of Afghanistan, and apparently in other parts of the Islamic world, for men to rape young boys. Decent, moral U.S. soldiers who have witnessed such atrocities reacted the way you would expect them to — they tried to stop the rapes. Unbelievably, orders were issued saying this was part of the Afghan culture and to interfere would cause ill-will toward the United States. Our soldiers were ordered to turn a blind eye to sexual child abuse. Captain Dan Quinn and Sgt. First Class Charles Martland, both Green Berets, nonetheless intervened to prevent such a rape. Quinn was relieved of his command and retired early. St. Martland is now being drummed out of the U.S. military.

*As the Republican presidential hopefuls converged for their debate at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., each was hoping to reap political advantage from the national TV exposure. But for most of the candidates who would appear on the stage, any hope of a surge was, at best, a longshot. Last week, President Obama committed America to taking in 10,000 more refugees from Syria, but there are hints the figure could be closer to 100,000.
Poll Position, Lives Matter
New polling out of Iowa is sending shock waves throughout the political establishments of both parties. A Des Moines Register poll of likely caucus goers finds Bernie Sanders surging to within seven points of Hillary Clinton. Thirty percent of Iowa Democrats back the Vermont socialist compared to 37% for Clinton. Fourteen percent of Democrats back Vice President Joe Biden. Pollsters note that Hillary has lost one-third of her support and see another potential upset in the making. Among young Iowa Democrats, Sanders beats Clinton by 23 points. He leads among likely first-time caucus goers by 12 points. It was this kind of enthusiasm that Obama successfully channeled to overcome the Clinton machine in 2008.
