‘Sesame Street’ Moves to HBO, and Everyone Wins
Starting this fall, “Sesame Street” will be brought to its millions of viewers by the letters H, B, and O. After 45 years as a jewel in the crown of public broadcasting, the iconic children’s television program is moving to the cable network better known for such decidedly adult fare as “Game of Thrones” and “True Detective.” The five-year deal, announced last week by Sesame Workshop and HBO, is a good-news story from every angle: good for the show’s fans, good for the nonprofit that creates it, and good for anyone who never before noticed that there was always an obvious and reassuring response to the public-television slogan: “If PBS doesn’t do it, who will?”
Hypocrites Line Up on Sesame Street
The churning of market forces in television are once again forcing the question of why Americans are spending hundreds of millions of tax dollars a year on public broadcasting. On August 13, HBO announced it was buying all-new episodes of the iconic PBS show “Sesame Street,” delaying their debut on PBS for nine months. Decades of liberal mockery of Republicans for wanting to “kill Big Bird” just collapsed in an ugly pile. The show that was supposedly dedicated to poor kids in “underserved” communities was just sold to the highest-bidding paywall in Yuppie Land. Before that they were negotiating with Amazon and Netflix as well.
Encrusted With Subsidies
You probably never knew of the federal funding of museums commemorating America’s long-gone whaling industry. The funding existed for nearly nine years, until fiscal 2011, *because* almost no one knew about it. A mohair subsidy continues six decades after it was deemed a military necessity in the context of the Cold War. The subsidy survives *because* its beneficiaries are too clever to call attention to it by proclaiming it necessary, which of course it isn’t. To understand these two matters is to understand how American government functions. And why James Madison, whose flinty realism is often called pessimism, was too optimistic.
