Canada, when it comes to assisted suicide, is earning its nickname as America’s evil top hat.
This is a nation that introduced Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) in 2016 as a way to legalize suicide for people who have severe illnesses. Now it is in the process of expanding MAiD to include teens struggling with mental health issues as well as the homeless.
This is what “free healthcare” looks like at scale.
When MAiD was made into law, the thought was that this method of dying would be exceptionally rare. (Sound familiar?) It didn’t take long for the number of recipients to bloat to one in 20 Canadians.
MAiD is now a suggested “cure” for those waiting on the nationalized healthcare system to treat them — and it could get much worse. A doctors’ group in the Great White North is looking to get the ball rolling to legalize MAiD for infants.
Like the Netherlands, Canadian doctors are pushing for their own version of the Groningen Protocol. The Quebec College of Physicians has voiced support for expanding MAiD to infants with “severe deformities or syndromes.” It said in a statement:
The CMQ reiterates that medical assistance in dying may be an appropriate treatment for babies suffering from extreme pain that cannot be relieved and who have severe malformations or serious polysymptomatic syndromes that destroy any prospect of survival. The CMQ believes that parents should have the opportunity to obtain this care for their infant under these well-defined circumstances.
The entire premise of this position is to prevent pain and suffering. But who’s to say that it’s not the beginning of yet another slippery slope?
What qualifies as “severe” — Down syndrome?
Will MAiD eventually be expanded to incorporate children with severe learning disabilities?
Furthermore, if the justification is to prevent suffering, why not end the “suffering” of education in the same manner?
The above sarcasm is to prove a point. The term “suffering” is too broad a term and should never be the justification for ending a human life.
But consider this: The Canadians are literally talking about tiny innocent babies who cannot advocate for themselves. Here, the very phrase “assisted suicide” is ludicrous. Suicide implies self-murder. A baby who endures such a horrific death without any real choice in the matter is being murdered, plain and simple.
What “crime” have these children committed that is deserving of the death penalty? It’s that they were not born perfectly healthy. Isn’t a doctor’s job to aid those who are sick and suffering? Killing them is not “healthcare”; it’s murder with a socially acceptable name.
The U.S. is not much better. Massachusetts recently legalized abortion up to birth. We are in very poor company, as only six other countries allow this monstrous act: Canada, China, the Netherlands, North Korea, Singapore, and Vietnam. Communist nations view aborted babies as fewer mouths to feed. Our excuse is a misplaced definition of personal freedom trumping personal responsibility. It was the same logic of “safe, legal, and rare” that started us down the abortion path to Hades.
Canada still has time to reverse course on MAiD. All life has value, and infants have no voice to defend themselves. It’s up to Canada’s adults to take a stand and stop this before it gains traction.
