Democrat Contempt for Norms, the Border, and American Lives

As tens of thousands die because of Joe Biden’s open borders, Senate Dems couldn’t be bothered to even hear the evidence.

Democrats caterwauled every time Donald Trump would “destroy norms” in Washington. It turns out that was a classic case of what psychologists would call “projection” — displacing your own faults onto someone else.

Okay, they weren’t entirely making it up. Trump does often destroy norms, though often ones that need destroying. Democrats, on the other hand, have totally nuked numerous cultural norms and called the rest of us bigots for saying, “Hey, wait a minute.” More to the point at hand, they’ve blown up the separation of powers, checks and balances, states’ rights, and the Rule of Law itself. Oh yeah, and they ruined impeachment by conducting two such shams against Trump.

So, it was little surprise that on Wednesday, the Senate summarily dismissed impeachment articles sent by the House against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a party-line vote, Senate Dems thwarted the Republicans’ effort to put Mayorkas on trial, as the Constitution prescribes. Imagine if the GOP-controlled Senate had pulled this stunt on the Democrat-controlled House when it delivered the first impeachment articles against Trump. So, once again, just like they did with judicial appointments, the Democrats have set a precedent: Going forward, the Senate can simply refuse to hold a trial when the House impeaches.

It is the first time in U.S. history, covering 22 House impeachments, that the Senate exonerated a defendant without even holding a trial. Whatever happened to norms?

“Senator Schumer and Senate Democrats just bulldozed hundreds of years of precedent to shelter one of the worst cabinet members in history,” said Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt. “Senator Schumer and Senate Democrats diminished the institution of the Senate today, and set ablaze the Constitution and long-standing precedent. When Joe Biden and the Democrat Party talk about ‘threats to democracy,’ they need to take a good long look in the mirror.”

Speaking of “norms,” instead of freely campaigning for president, Trump is tied up in a courtroom for one of six trials at the hands of Democrat prosecutors persecutors. Yet Democrats couldn’t even bother to put Mayorkas up for one trial and a perfunctory acquittal.

It’s true that the House passed the Mayorkas impeachment articles by just one vote in February. It’s also true that Mayorkas is just the henchman for Joe Biden’s policy of open borders and the ensuing intentional invasion.

House Republicans were never under any illusion that impeaching the secretary would lead to Senate conviction, removal from office, or even the remotest accountability for Biden’s gross dereliction on the border. They did so, however, because it was worth making the political case that the Biden administration’s contempt for the Rule of Law at the border is having catastrophic consequences.

Consequences like tens of thousands of dead Americans every year thanks to Chinese fentanyl smuggled across the border by Mexican drug cartels. Team Biden has a lot of blood on its collective hands, and Mayorkas is the point man.

It was remarkable, if also predictable, that Democrats would not take this seriously. They dismissed the two impeachment articles as “policy differences” that fell short of the constitutional standard for high crimes and misdemeanors. The hypocrisy after two Trump impeachments is almost unbelievable.

Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy aptly explains the problem: “It’s amusing that Senate Democrats tried to claim the constitutional high ground by dismissing the allegations as non-impeachable offenses. Of course, constitutionally speaking, that is not the Senate’s call. The Constitution vests the House with plenary authority over what an impeachable offense is. The Senate’s job is to try the case and acquit if it thinks the evidence is too weak.”

I’ll add one more bit of norm-busting. The Democrats keep clamoring to get rid of the filibuster for legislation as they did for judicial nominees (a destruction of another norm that soon backfired). Yet what they’ve done is effectively filibuster the House, showing contempt for a coequal part of Congress.

And why are they doing it? Because they want an open border. They want tens of millions of future voters. And they don’t give a rat’s rear end about the destruction of norms and law, or the chaos, crime, and loss of life that results.

Indeed, I’ll leave you with the blistering speech by Senator Ted Cruz, who represents the state of Texas and is clearly furious at how the Biden administration has allowed his state to be overrun with illegal aliens. And Senate Democrats are perfectly fine with that scorn for the Constitution and the mayhem and death that result. “They truly do not care about the Constitution, rule of law, or the safety and security of American citizens.”
