Strange Anti-Semitism on the Right
While the Left’s embrace of anti-Semitism has become front and center, the problem is not confined to the Left.
It has been a ridiculous and false smear, but many Democrats and Leftmedia blowhards accuse Donald Trump and his MAGA supporters of being fascists and Nazis. Much of this rhetoric was tied to their fearmongering claim that Trump represented an existential “threat to democracy.”
The irony, of course, is that the Democrat Party failed to follow the democratic process when installing Kamala Harris as its presidential candidate. More troubling is that currently holding sway within the party are lawmakers such as Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Talib, who repeatedly espouse anti-Semitic views. Democrat anti-Semitism has been growing for years.
So, exactly which party more resembles actual fascists and Nazis?
Furthermore, much of the current mass expressions of anti-Semitism are in places like Columbia University, where anti-Israel activists express their anti-Semitism wrapped in the garb of concern for the plight of Palestinians.
Yet, while the Left currently holds the lion’s share of anti-Semites who have become well-organized and are politically active, the ugly problem is not confined to the Left.
Frustratingly, on the fringes of the Right, there has been a growing number of anti-Semites who push their racism via numerous conspiracy theories. They have taken advantage of conservatives who, after years of enduring a mainstream media dominated by those on the Left suppressing and mischaracterizing conservatives and their views, have confused the defense of free speech with unchecked permissiveness.
There are such things as bad ideas. And there are such things as false and morally repugnant views. Defense of the freedom of individuals to espouse such immoral views as anti-Semitism does not mean these views should be taken as legitimate and worthy of expression. Indeed, they should be challenged at every turn because they are immoral and evil.
And this is where some members of the growing new media on the Right have failed and are failing.
Two individuals in particular come to mind. The first is Candace Owens, a popular and influential cultural, social, and political commentator on the Right. Recall that Owens was with The Daily Wire until she got sideways with Ben Shapiro following Hamas’s October 7 terrorist attack, as she began to “question” the narrative on Israel as well as the Holocaust. She infamously trotted out the “Christ is King” retort in a protracted online argument with Shapiro, only to play innocent when he took offense, calling it anti-Semitic.
But her leaving The Daily Wire did not end her anti-Semitic dalliance; rather, she has only leaned into it harder, delving into numerous anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and defending it by claiming she’s simply asking questions and seeking the truth.
The truth is that Owens is engaged in painting the veneer of legitimate investigative journalism over anti-Semitism. Unfortunately, it has inspired others to take these absurd and blatantly racist conspiracies seriously.
Another popular individual is Tucker Carlson. Now, for clarity, unlike Owens, Carlson has not delved into anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. Furthermore, there is little to suggest that Carlson holds any anti-Semitic views. However, Carlson has been willing, under the guise of “just asking questions,” to fail to question the dubious and false assertions of certain guests.
One of the most blatant examples of this was Carlson’s interview with Darryl Cooper, a man he described as “the best and most honest popular historian” in America. Cooper is better described as a contrarian revisionist whose seeming aim is to turn the long-established understanding of the historical record on its head. It was during this infamous interview that Cooper claimed Winston Churchill was the biggest villain of World War II — a fundamentally dishonest and ill-informed perspective of the actual historical record, with which Carlson seemed all too enamored.
To make his ridiculous claim, Cooper downplayed the Holocaust and excused many of the atrocities and war crimes committed by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.
In response to widespread criticism of his interview, Carlson essentially insisted, All I was doing was asking questions, or coyly asked, Aren’t we defending the freedom of speech? The issue was not that Carlson interviewed Cooper; the issue was how he interviewed him. Carlson has a long history of doing interviews with individuals on the Left and calling out their ridiculous claims, yet when it came to Cooper, Carlson was seemingly all ears.
This gets to the root of the issue. There is an unfortunate number of new media individuals on the Right who are not pushing back and challenging the obviously wrong, racist, and vile ideas of anti-Semitic conspiracies like they have pushed back against the Left’s woke and racist DEI ideas.
The good news is that this problem of anti-Semitism on the Right is nowhere as big or organized as it is on the Left. However, in order to keep it this way, conservatives must be willing to quickly and loudly call it out. Tribalism is not a justification for failing to expose and call out error on one’s own side. This anti-Semitic cancer must be expunged, or it will deceive and corrupt the minds of others.
