Ethanol Produces More GHGs
Wasn’t this mandate supposed to lower emissions?
Studies reveal that corn biofuels, mandated for usage by the EPA in 2007, not only have detrimental effects on automobile engines, but also take a huge bite out of consumers’ wallets as well. Nearly 40% of the nation’s corn last year was harvested for ethanol production, helping drive food prices skyward and raising greenhouse gas emissions. Yes, you read that right. A new government study reveals that corn biofuels contribute more to GHGs than conventional fuel. The Associated Press reports, “A $500,000 study paid for by the federal government and released Sunday in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Climate Change concludes that biofuels made with corn residue release 7 percent more greenhouse gases in the early years compared with conventional gasoline.” You know lawmakers are full of hot air when even the federal government concedes this mandate’s uselessness.
