Which version is correct?
There are inconsistences in former Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s account of the backroom politics that shaped the banking crisis of 2008. As you may remember, Geitner’s policy was to bail out the large banks, and in his political kiss-and-tell, he claims he was told to lie by White House officials. He turned around and denied that in a Fox News interview, saying, “I was never, ever in the position where anyone in the White House asked me to do that.” Which version is a lie? Neil Barofsky, former Treasury inspector general, said, “The largest banks, that helped bring us into crisis in 2008, are 25, in some accounts, 30, 35% bigger than they were going into the crisis.” He continued, “[W]e had a real opportunity to fix that system, to break up the banks, to have accountability for those executives responsible for driving the global economy into a ditch. And Tim Geithner’s reputation and legacy, I believe, will be the guy that defended them.” For a man trying to defend that legacy, the truth isn’t all that important. More…
