Trump Encourages While Visiting Florence-Ravaged Carolinas

The president promises continued support as he engages with hurricane victims.

With all the focus on the circus surrounding Brett Kavanaugh’s SCOTUS confirmation process, it might be easy to forget that people in the Carolinas are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, particularly the devastating flooding. President Donald Trump hasn’t forgotten, as he visited Wednesday to survey the damage and offer his support and encouragement to those suffering from the storm, as well as to those working around the clock to help in restoration and repair efforts.

At a Marine Corps air station in Havelock, North Carolina, Trump expressed both his sympathy and commitment to the victims of the storm: “Hurricane Florence was one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the Carolinas. … To the families who have lost loved ones, America grieves with you, and our hearts break for you. God bless you. We will never forget your loss. We will never leave your side. We’re with you all the way. And to all those impacted by this terrible storm, our entire American family is with you and ready to help. And you will recover.”

Along with North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, FEMA Director Brock Long, and several public officials, Trump praised the work of those involved in responding to Florence. “Incredible job being done by FEMA, First Responders, Law Enforcement and all. Thank you!” Trump stated. He also listed the numerous ways in which federal and state entities, as well as private citizens, have stepped up to support in rescue and clean-up efforts.

Trump also spent time at a shelter passing out meals, greeting people, and offering words of encouragement to individuals recovering from the epic flooding.

Sadly, the death toll from Florence has risen to 35, and with continued flooding may rise further. Thankfully, the coordinated efforts of private citizens in conjunction with federal, state, and local authorities have gone a long way in helping to limit the loss of life.

Trump’s response to the storm has been, well, presidential. Unfortunately, the Leftmedia is still too caught up in its own intellectually debilitating Trump Derangement Syndrome to recognize how making a light-hearted joke in a devastatingly difficult situation is a legitimate form of empathy. On Wednesday, The Washington Post criticized Trump for supposedly lacking empathy when he joked with a man about a boat that ended up in his yard after Florence’s flood waters. “Is this your boat? Or … did it become your boat?” Trump teased. The man replied in the negative, to which Trump quipped with a smile, “At least you got a nice boat out of the deal.” Evidently, humorless leftists like those at the Post must be unfamiliar with that old adage: Laughter is the best medicine.
