The J6 Hearings: A Missed Opportunity for Truth

An honest accounting about the events of January 6 was the last thing on the minds of House Democrats.

Word has it that the Democratic [sic] National Committee had to cancel a recent fundraiser hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris. Seems they couldn’t sell enough tickets. Pity.

We mention this because Nancy Pelosi, Liz Cheney, and Bennie Thompson don’t seem to have the good sense to cancel these soporific J6 hearings. They’re not selling many tickets, and yet on they go, trying to convince a half-empty theater of Trump haters what a really bad guy Donald Trump is.

These are the True Believers, the obsessive and self-destructive pursuers of that great and terrible orange whale. They’re the ones who define the very word fanatic: They won’t change their minds, and they can’t change the subject. Their sole intention, then, is to deceive the American people about what happened on January 6, and to distract them from the very real economic and social issues that are crushing them.

If ever a people had moved on from a sorry event in its nation’s history, this is it. But for a relative handful of Trump-deranged Democrats, two soon-to-be former Republican congresspersons, and Jonah Goldberg, the American people have long since put January 6 in their rear-view mirror. Indeed, poll after poll shows that we’re far more concerned about the economy, and inflation, and gas prices, and crime, and gun violence, and illegal immigration, and abortion, and a list of other things. In a recent Ipsos poll, January 6 wasn’t even among the 11 issues on the list.

It didn’t have to be this way. Thoughtful Americans could’ve learned a great deal from an honest accounting about January 6 — from an honest committee conducting an honest hearing. We could’ve learned why Nancy Pelosi, who as House speaker is responsible for the Capitol’s security, failed so miserably to secure it even though she had advanced knowledge of the potential for violence, and even though she had Trump’s authorization for 20,000 National Guardsmen. And we could’ve learned why the FBI hasn’t come clean about its role in promoting the violence — and its relationship with Ray Epps and the others whom they paid to help incite the storming of the Capitol building. After all, as New York Times reporter Matt Rosenberg said in a moment of devastating candor, “There were a ton of FBI informants amongst the people who attacked the Capitol.”

Instead, we’re getting a dog-and-pony show — a trial in which the defense isn’t even represented. Serious men such as House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jim Jordan and Republican Study Committee Chair Jim Banks, both of whom Pelosi unlawfully kicked off the committee, would’ve brought serious scrutiny and balance to the proceedings.

But no. In this respect, what we’re seeing would’ve made Joseph Stalin proud — because what the Democrats are putting on is little more a Soviet-style show trial.

Historian Victor Davis Hanson writes persuasively about what this committee could’ve been and done. In addition to the questions above, he asks some other good ones:

  • Why did a Capitol cop, Michael Byrd, shoot and kill an unarmed 35-year-old woman, a 110-pound Air Force veteran named Ashli Babbitt, and why was the officer’s identity and all information about his record withheld from the public?

  • Why did the Democrats and their media lickspittles report that officer Brian Sicknick was bludgeoned to death with a fire extinguisher by Trump supporters, even when they knew it to be a lie?

  • Why is the committee so obsessed with the Capitol riot and yet so disinterested in the riots of the previous summer, when “rioting, arson, and looting continued for nearly four months … [and its] toll resulted in over 35 dead, some 1,500 police officers injured, around 14,000 arrests, and between $1-2 billion in property damage”? (We know the answer, but the question is still worth asking.)

If the purpose of this one-sided affair, this rigged and ridiculous pseudo-trial, was merely to re-energize the Democrats’ deeply demoralized base ahead of a midterm shellacking, they could’ve had the decency to tell us so.

Of course, January 6 is all they’ve got. No solutions for what ails the American people. Just January 6, and Moby Trump.

Thar she blows!
