Biden’s ‘Brandonburg’ Gate
The only wall he’s tearing down is any kind of separation at all between the U.S. and Mexico.
On June 12, 1987, Ronald Reagan stood at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, part of the Soviet Union’s Iron Curtain, and uttered these famous words: “Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Joe Biden was then a spry 44 years old and preparing to blow up his first presidential bid with plagiarism and autobiographical lies. He also obviously learned the wrong message about walls because his open-borders policy has created a “Brandonburg” Gate into America.
Illegal border crossings have continued to soar, setting an all-time single-month record in May, which sort of brings a whole new meaning to “mayday” and “May Day” all at the same time.
The first and most important point about immigration is that the illegal and unbelievable flood of migrants across our border is by Joe Biden’s design. Fundamentally, the radical leftists running the Democrat Party no longer believe in borders, and Biden is nothing if not a party man. Hence his efforts since day one of his presidency to essentially erase our southern border.
Now, for some numbers. In May 2021, more than 180,000 people illegally crossed the U.S. southern border. This May, that number spiked to nearly 240,000. As the Republican National Committee points out, “It’s a 32 percent increase over last May, and a 300 percent increase from the average number of May apprehensions during the Trump administration.”
Of those 240,000, nearly 15,000 were unaccompanied minors. More than 112,000 came from nations outside Mexico and the Northern Triangle, which means the administration’s rhetoric about and foreign aid to address the “root causes” in those countries is, to quote a favorite Biden phrase, a bunch of malarkey. At least 15 border crossers are on the FBI’s terror watch list.
“More than 3.5 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border since Biden took office,” says the RNC. “This includes the 2.9 million illegal immigrants that Customs and Border Protection has apprehended and the more than 600,000 gotaways that have escaped into the U.S. undetected.” The Border Patrol doesn’t officially report the number of “gotaways,” and it’s likely far higher. To put it all in perspective, the total number of border crossers exceeds the populations of 23 states.
Meanwhile, Biden released more than 21,000 illegals into the U.S. in May. During Donald Trump’s last full month in office, that number was just 17.
These numbers are stunning and alarming, but, again, it’s all by design. The only “root causes” here are Biden’s open-border policies, and the only thing he’s doing these days is demonizing and punishing Border Patrol agents for doing their jobs.
Nevertheless, we’ll let Biden have the last word with this quote from 2019: “I would in fact make sure that there is, that we immediately surge to the border — all those people are seeking asylum. They deserve to be heard. That’s who we are. We’re a nation that says, ‘If you want to flee and you’re fleeing oppression, you should come.’”
