Wednesday Short Cuts

Notable quotables from Cal Thomas, Nancy Pelosi, Kamala Harris, and more.

Insight

“We want a society in which we are free to make choices, to make mistakes, to be generous and compassionate. That is what we mean by a moral society — not a society in which the State is responsible for everything, and no one is responsible for the State.” —Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013)

Inquiring Minds Want to Know

“Joe Biden wasn’t the only one who made disturbing comments on ‘60 Minutes’ this weekend. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi told the CBS News program that he wasn’t entirely sure about that whole Holocaust thing. Asked if he believed that six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, Raisi replied, ‘There are some signs that it happened. If so, they should allow it to be investigated and researched.’ Earlier this year, Joe Biden said, ‘We must reject those who try to deny the Holocaust or to distort its history for their own ends. We recognize that, just as the Holocaust was an act of pure anti-Semitism, so too Holocaust denial is a form of anti-Semitism.’ Of course, I agree completely. Every decent person does. So, why is Biden allowing Raisi, who oversaw the executions of thousands of Iranians, to come into the country to address the United Nations this week? Why is Biden trying to reward this Holocaust denier with a new nuclear deal, giving the tyrants of Tehran billions of dollars in sanctions relief? The only thing worse than a Holocaust denier is a Holocaust denier with nuclear weapons!” —Gary Bauer

For the Record

“Let this sink in: $1.00 at the start of the Biden administration is now worth $0.88. This is the Democrats’ tax on the middle class, and it’s crushing all Americans.” —Senator Ron Johnson

“If you’re a senior lucky enough to hold $100,000 in a retirement account at the start of the Biden administration, it’s now worth only $88,300. It’s like the federal government stole $12,000 out of your savings account, and that’s exactly what they did because of their exorbitant and out-of-control deficit spending, and they have no intention of stopping.” —Ron Johnson

“The last time the United States had to deal with inflation, the federal government’s debt was equivalent to 30 percent of GDP. Today, that number is 130 percent. Maybe we should have thought about this earlier?” —Charles C.W. Cooke

“It’s kind of insane that we have trucks and trains carrying oil all over this country rather than constructing pipelines, which would permit accessing more resources [and] cheaper, safer transmission.” —former Obama economic advisor Larry Summers

“It is amusing to listen to the squealing of those politicians who self-righteously claimed to offer open arms to all migrants but then turn on them, as though they were a vast migration of Republicans. Some of these politicians have quoted the Emma Lazarus poem engraved on the Statue of Liberty about sending us ‘your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ They now have flipped, preferring a version of the Little Richard song ‘Keep A-knockin’, but you can’t come in.‘” —Cal Thomas

“Do our immigration laws mean nothing? Don’t our leaders take oaths to uphold the laws of the United States and protect and defend the Constitution? Those laws were passed by Republican and Democratic members of Congress and signed by presidents of both parties. President Biden is violating his oath of office, as is his secretary of Homeland Security, when they refuse to enforce them. There are checkpoints where people fleeing their countries for humanitarian reasons can be legally processed while their claims are validated. No nation can maintain its character and existence if it does not control its border.” —Cal Thomas

Non Compos Mentis Award

“There are fewer immigrants coming from Central America and from Mexico. This is a totally different circumstance. What’s on my watch now is Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua, and the ability to send them back to those states is not rational.” —President Joe Biden

Potomac Fever

“I believe that … we need some more resources to be sure that it’s over.” —House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Biden’s declaration that “the pandemic is over”

Grand Delusions

“There is nothing wrong with Joe Biden. … I feel like if you’ve done a good job I want you to continue to do that.” —"The View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg

“I think Gavin Newsom is sort of that fresh energy that we need. I think that he’s charismatic. I think that he is smart. He runs the fifth-largest economy in the world, more productive than India and the United Kingdom. I think if you want someone that has real leadership and business experience — I’m not even going to talk about the good looks — Gavin Newsom.” —"The View" co-host Sunny Hostin

“Gavin Newsom and Stacey Abrams. What a ticket that would be. Pretty good!” —"The View" co-host Joy Behar

Yellow Journalism

“Separating Sports by Sex Doesn’t Make Sense.” —The Atlantic (“This is where transgender athletics leads, one unisex sports leagues where women’s athletes don’t exist.” —Clay Travis)

Veep Thoughts With Kamala

“We invested an additional $12 billion into community banks, because we know community banks are in the community and understand the needs and desires of that community as well as the talent and capacity of community.” —Vice President Kamala Harris
