Varieties of Democrats’ Anti-Trumpism
The phalanx of morose expressions that greeted President Trump’s first State of the Union speech made Eeyore look like an optimist; indeed, if frowns are supposed to trigger more muscles than smiles, Democrats’ facial calisthenics must have left them exhausted as they slunk out of the chamber scorching the air with resentment on the way. Although their serial scowling hints uniformity, the following taxonomy that categorizes recent and well-publicized events suggests at least a few differences among them.

The White House will reportedly authorize the release of the House Intelligence Committee memo this morning. That memo details abuses and anti-Trump bias at the FBI. In the last 48 hours, the FBI has fought hard to prevent its release.

State of the Union Postgame
Well, that was a home run. The State of the Union speech was beautifully written and brilliantly delivered. It hit the right balance of bragging about accomplishments, presenting a vision for the future, and celebrating America — all while repeatedly offering paths to reach unifying middle grounds on some key initiatives. Credit was constantly given to the American people, and the use of first-person pronouns appeared with about one-tenth the frequency of the typical Obama performance. Even the use of guests with personal stories served to underscore the points being made about issues ranging from immigration to the military to patriotism to foreign policy rather than simply tugging on heartstrings.

Tuesday night’s State of the Union address was a Trump-strong speech. All the buzz was that the president would be conciliatory and reach out to Democrats. And he did on major policy issues — an immigration deal, a big infrastructure program, lowering drug prices and paid family leave.
