Fake Protests Feed Fake News
No one should be fooled into thinking that the made-for-TV raucous and angry responses over the repeal of ObamaCare from what appear to be large numbers of constituents at congressmen’s district town hall meetings is spontaneous or representative of anything other than a small minority of trained activists.
A Wry Squint Into Our Grim Future
Although America’s political system seems unable to stimulate robust, sustained economic growth, it at least is stimulating consumption of a small but important segment of literature. Dystopian novels are selling briskly — Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” (1932), Sinclair Lewis’ “It Can’t Happen Here” (1935), George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” (1945) and “1984” (1949), Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” (1953) and Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” (1985), all warning about nasty regimes displacing democracy.

I was unable to watch President Trump’s speech to Congress in real time but heard it was phenomenal. I watched it the next day, and it was even better than I expected.
National Sigh of Relief
The morning after President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, the Dow Jones industrial average shot up 300 points, lifting the stock market above 21,000. But the excitement of the money managers couldn’t touch the ecstasy of conservative observers. John Hinderaker of the Power Line blog gushed that the speech was “tremendous” and “inspired,” and that Trump himself was “magnificent.” Chris Wallace of Fox News dubbed the speech “one of the best speeches in that setting I’ve ever heard any president give ever by a president.” The Wall Street Journal’s James Freeman offered that Trump delivered “perhaps the most compelling moment in the history of presidential addresses.”
Trump Hits a Home Run
One after another, the pundits hailed President Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress as his finest speech, though the usual naysayers were quick to snarkily add that it was his only good speech. Yuk-yuk. Fox News Channel’s Brit Hume, a serious analyst with, by his count, some 40 of these speeches under his belt, called Tuesday night’s address one of the most riveting and unforgettable speeches he’s ever heard. Hume said the general consensus was Trump “hit it out of the park.”

Let me pose a hypothetical situation to you. A man and woman marry. They have three children over the course of their 20 years of marriage. In recent years, the husband has been more and more withdrawn. Something has changed. His wife and children can see it. He knows it. He goes to a therapist to deal with whatever it is that is affecting him. One day, well into therapy, the husband announces he identifies as a woman and intends to begin sex reassignment. The wife and children are horrified and the wife files for divorce. The question is this: is the wife a bigot?
