The Freedom Lover

I must confess I never considered Barack Obama a lover of freedom. After all, when there was a democratic uprising in Iran, he went golfing. When he might have secured freedom for Syrians, at least from the threat of being exterminated by Assad and Putin, Obama first announced a red line, and then quickly erased it. When Russia consumed Crimea, Obama once again took to the links and worked on his approach shot.

An Excess of Intellectual Emptiness

In 2013, a college student assigned to research a deadly substance sought help via Twitter: “I can’t find the chemical and physical properties of sarin gas someone please help me.” An expert at a security consulting firm tried to be helpful, telling her that sarin is not gas. She replied, “yes the [expletive] it is a gas you ignorant [expletive]. sarin is a liquid & can evaporate ... shut the [expletive] up.”

March for Life

[Friday] hundreds of thousands of people came to Washington, DC, to stand for the sanctity of life. No cars were burned. No windows were smashed. No garbage was burned in the streets. No innocent bystanders were assaulted by the marchers. No police officers were sent to the hospital. This was a peaceful demonstration led by men and women of faith who are here to defend innocent human life. The annual March for Life is always one of the highlights of the year.

By all means, build a wall on the border, but don’t make Mexico pay for it. It was a great — and by great I mean effective, not noble or heroic — applause line from then-candidate Trump on the campaign trail. Audiences loved it, particularly the call-and-response. Trump: “Who’s going to pay for it?” The crowd: “MEXICO!” But the campaign is over and so is fun time. If the wall is worth having, it’s worth paying for.

Stop Telling Us How to Be Patriotic

Politicians have no business directing or defining patriotism, especially when their rhetoric sounds like 1950s-era Soviet sloganeering. It was creepy when former President Barack Obama declared his first Inauguration Day as “National Day of Renewal and Reconciliation” and called upon us to find “common purpose of remaking this nation for our new century.” And it’s creepy when President Donald Trump declares his Inauguration Day as “National Day of Patriotic Devotion,” one in which “a new national pride stirs the American soul and inspires the American heart.”

There is much to cheer about President Trump’s first decisions as president. Conservatives are almost certainly going to love his Supreme Court pick, his stepped-up efforts to deport criminal aliens, the approval of two oil pipelines stubbornly blocked by the previous administration and more.

As expected the Left is reacting furiously to [Wednesday’s] announcements by President Trump that we are taking control of our borders and enforcing our immigration laws. Just consider this headline from Politico: “Democrats Launch Scorched-earth Strategy Against Trump.”

A Dose of Reality on ObamaCare

While the part of President Trump’s agenda that he controls is off to a flying start, the portion of the agenda dependent upon congressional action is still trying to get off the ground. The timing of President Trump’s biggest priority — repealing Obamacare and defunding Planned Parenthood — is now uncertain. The hold-up is over the replace portion of the repeal-and-replace effort. A handful of moderate Republicans are reportedly saying they won’t vote for a repeal unless the replace is included in the same measure. That could prove problematic.

In a conversation about homosexuality a few years ago, a Catholic priest made a powerful observation. “Do you realize Heaven is full of gay saints?” he said. His point: The homosexual condition exists; the exercise is sinful. Those honoring God’s law carry an especially heavy cross through life, and for that they are rewarded with paradise.

Among other things, President Trump announced a crackdown on sanctuary cities that harbor illegal aliens. He also plans to provide the Department of Homeland Security with more resources to fight illegal immigration. And remember the Obama administration’s “catch and release” policies?
