We Must Not Destroy the Constitution to Save It

I really worry that the Trump movement is a misguided reaction to the abuses of power by the ruling class in Washington, D.C. In our dire predicament, we need to be very thoughtful about our remedy. Some presumably well-intentioned people are convinced that because federal politicians have caused the problems threatening America, only an "outsider" can fix them. I understand the sentiment, but a mere cursory comparison of the two leading candidates vying for the GOP presidential nomination exposes the fallacy.

There should be no surprise that former Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers, who played a role in launching the political career of Barack Obama, was found among the street demonstrators in Chicago who succeeded in forcefully disrupting and shutting down Republican frontrunner Donald Trump's campaign rally on March 11, injuring two police officers who were trying to maintain order.

[Wednesday] Donald Trump was interviewed by journalist Chris Matthews. At one point in their conversation, Matthews raised the issue of abortion, and asked Trump if women who have abortions should be punished.

As we say in the South — it's time for a "Come to Jesus Moment." The 2016 Republican presidential race has been one of the most rancorous in recent history. The behavior of the candidates and their followers has been downright repulsive. There are no clean hands among this bunch. Actress Susan Sarandon embodies the definitive caricature of the raving socialist who brims with "compassion" and with an estimated net worth of $50 million. She infuriated many liberals by telling MSNBC host Chris Hayes on March 28 that she can only envision Sen. Bernie Sanders for president: "I really want to be on the right side of history, and this is a shot that we're not going to have again in my lifetime, to have a candidate that is so morally consistent," while Hillary Clinton is "inauthentic" and a stalking horse for Wall Street, fracking or Monsanto.

After a recent three-episode binge, I realized that, like many within my demographic group, I too was hooked and that the show was speaking to me in some way. Interestingly, the show's concept isn't particularly new; many may remember "Trading Spaces" (2000-2011), a show in which homeowners and designers had $1,000 and two days to transform a room in each other's homes. No, the draw to "Fixer Upper" isn't the format; it's tapping into something far more significant within the inner lives of its viewers.

In a second loss in less than two weeks, a federal court has once again ruled *against* the Obama administration, this time in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) tussle with Judicial Watch over the Clinton email fiasco. Previously, on March 22, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the Justice Department and the IRS to stop their "continuous resistance" and "meritless" objections to producing information and documentation sought in a lawsuit filed by a Tea Party organization in the IRS targeting scandal.

The Trump Riddle Wrapped Up in an Enigma

The front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, businessman Donald Trump, has been called a lot of things by the media and his adversaries. When it comes to his policy positions, however, it's difficult to put a political label on him. For instance, though he holds some pretty standard free market positions on taxes, he's far from being a purist on the issue. On one hand, he would cut the top marginal individual rate to 25 percent and reduce the number of brackets to three to encourage productive behavior. However, his plan fails to remove most double taxation of income saved and invested and fails to eliminate many deductions for special interest groups. He would also remove a large number of taxpayers from the tax rolls, exacerbating the illusion that government services are free.

Neither political party can lay claim to purity when it comes to hypocrisy, but Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, as well as others in her party, has taken hypocrisy to new depths. While campaigning in Wisconsin before next week's presidential primary, Clinton said that as president she would have a litmus test for any Supreme Court nominee. "I would not appoint someone who didn't think Roe v. Wade is settled law," she declared. Her nominee(s) would also have to show that they support overturning the Citizens United decision that established free speech rights for interest groups.

Why the Anger? Obamanomics Has Failed

President Barack Obama, when asked to name an accomplishment for which he is most proud, said, "I'm proud of saving the American economy." Breathtaking. Let's examine the facts, using only government, left wing — or, at least, non-conservative — statistics, sources or analyses.

Paul Ryan's Road Ahead

The House Speaker, the honorable Paul Ryan, recently expressed his hope for a more "confident America." He went on to say "we don't shut people down. If someone has a bad idea, we tell them why our idea is better. We don't insult them into agreeing with us." He spoke of the superiority of persuasion to execration. Close observers of the Ryan metier thought he was addressing Donald Trump. After listening to the campaigns in both parties, I have a different view. In my mind, Ryan was urging caution on everyone campaigning for the presidency this year. Certainly, his remarks were aimed at his fellow Republicans, including Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. John Kasich. Yet they were also aimed at Sen. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, who both disparage Trump, Cruz and Kasich — and forget not the infamous one percent — whenever they take the lectern.

That Donald Trump stands by the belligerent Lewandowski tells us more of what we already knew about Trump, and also hints at the coward beneath the blowhard.

Iran Cheats Again

Western nations that negotiated last year's nuclear deal with Iran have sent a letter to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon declaring that the Islamic Republic's recent ballistic missile tests are violations of U.N. Resolution 2231. In their letter, officials from the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany warn that the missiles Iran launched were "inherently capable of delivering nuclear weapons." As a result, the launches were "inconsistent with" and "in defiance of" U.N. resolutions, and the various countries are demanding that the Security Council consider "appropriate responses."
