As the calendar counts down to 2016, most Americans are focused on New Year’s Eve parties. Some are focused on next year’s campaign to replace President Obama. But what is Barack Obama thinking about? He’s thinking about how much more he can do to forever change America. In a recent email to his left-wing supporters, Obama offered a preview of what we can expect in the remaining days of his presidency: More assaults on our values and more attempts to end run Congress — as if the past seven years weren’t enough.
Farook Was Obsessed With Israel — What Else Do We Need to Know?
According to the father of the San Bernardino terrorist, Syed Rizwan Farook, his son was “obsessed with Israel.” In an interview in the Italian newspaper La Stampa, the senior Syed Farook said, “My son said that he shared [Islamic State leader] Al Baghdadi’s ideology and supported the creation of the Islamic State. He was also obsessed with Israel.” Likewise, the Los Angeles Times reported that “As the investigation unfolded, friends and family of the shooters came forward to offer snapshots that may point to what motivated Wednesday’s attack, including Farook’s apparent fixation on Israel and Malik’s devotion to a fundamentalist strain of Islam.”
In Israel, the More Things Change...
More than a decade after my 19th trip to Israel and the Middle East, this 20th visit shows how some things have changed, but the important ones remain the same. What one notices first is the large amount of new construction, which suggests a certain Israeli permanency against religious opposition, hatred and threats of annihilation perhaps no other country has had to endure. Second are the many prosperous Arab neighborhoods, which defies much of the propaganda broadcast to the world about how Israelis mistreat Arabs and Muslims, locking them in poverty.
Refugees Are Syria’s Business for U.S.
More than four million Syrian refugees have poured into Europe since the start of the country’s war five years ago. But it only took one of them to change Paris forever. Three days after the tragedy in France rocked the world, officials have confirmed that at least one of the terrorists snuck into the country posing as a Syrian refugee. That revelation, combined with fresh fears that ISIS is on the move in the West, is igniting a firestorm in the U.S., where President Obama announced his plans to open America’s arms to at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in 2016 (and as many as 100,000 if Democrats get their way).
Netanyahu’s Framing of Middle East Situation Is Spot-On
Americans could learn a thing or two from Bibi Netanyahu. The Israeli prime minister was in Washington this week to receive the American Enterprise Institute’s Irving Kristol Award. He made some controversial remarks — at least controversial at AEI, where I am a fellow, and where the freedom agenda is alive and well — about the need to be realistic about what’s going on in the Middle East. Sometimes, he said, brutal dictators are better than the real-world alternatives: even more brutal Islamist movements hell-bent (or, if you prefer, paradise-bent) to conquer the world.

Holy Land Wholly Enlightening
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Barack Obama met [Monday] in the Oval office for a meeting that onlookers called “cordial.” The public side of the meeting seemed uneventful, as Netanyahu reaffirmed his support for a two-state solution with conditions, and Obama said he was committed to expanded military aid to Israel.
