Yale historian Timothy Snyder is indebted to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently made Snyder’s new book even more newsworthy than his extraordinary scholarship deserves to be. And Netanyahu is indebted to Snyder, whose theory of Hitler’s anti-Semitism is germane to two questions: Is the Iranian regime’s anti-Semitism rooted, as Hitler’s was, in a theory of history that *demands* genocide? If so, when Iran becomes a nuclear power, can it be deterred from its announced determination to destroy Israel?
Something to Strive For?
When we think of things worth striving for, usually something noble comes to mind — striving for a better education, a new job or reaching a life goal. But by the standards of most Americans, one abortionist is striving for something sinister. The latest undercover video exposing Planned Parenthood’s barbaric fetal harvesting practices features Dr. Amna Dermish discussing how she was trained to “get the specimens out pretty intact.”
This Weekend’s ‘Cycle of Violence’
Friday, an Israeli family, driving near Beit El, was attacked with firebombs. A four-year-old girl suffered burns to more than 35% of her body. Her parents and two siblings were also wounded. Saturday, a 16-year-old Palestinian pretending to be a candy salesman attempted to stab Defense Ministry security guards near Jenin and was shot.
Would Rabin Have Pulled the Plug on a ‘Peace Process’ That Failed?
Had Yitzhak Rabin lived, would the Oslo Accords have nurtured genuine peace between Israel and the Palestinians? It has been 20 years since the assassination of Israel’s fifth prime minister in Tel Aviv by Yigal Amir, a right-wing Jewish fanatic who considered Rabin a traitor and bitterly opposed the Oslo process. The murder traumatized Israel and its friends, and the recriminations still reverberate.
Another Meeting of Unlike Minds
When President Obama meets in Washington November 9 with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, I would imagine Netanyahu’s main concern will be to find out exactly what the U.S. means by “infringement” as it applies to the Iran nuclear agreement. What exactly will the U.S. do when, not if, Iran violates the deal? What if Israel and the U.S. disagree as to whether there has been a violation?
‘Day of Rage’
Israelis [were] on heightened alert [yesterday] after the terrorist group Hamas declared Friday to be a “day of rage.” Palestinians began the day by taking out their rage on Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus, setting fire to the Jewish holy site. Reports indicate the shrine suffered serious damage. The Washington Post tells us that Muslims supposedly “venerate the site.” Yet it was attacked and destroyed by Palestinian mobs in 2000.
More ‘Nonsense’ About Israel
[Wednesday] a State Department spokesman attempted to clarify recent remarks by Obama administration officials regarding the recent wave of Palestinian terrorism in Israel. The clarification was more of the same verbal vomit that encourages our enemies and demoralizes our friends. “We recognize that incitement can go both ways here. Whether it’s action or rhetoric, it’s things that encourage others to continue this cycle of violence,” said State Department spokesman John Kirby.
GOP Money Race
Politico reports that billionaire Sheldon Adelson may be on the verge of endorsing Florida Senator Marco Rubio and committing his considerable wealth to backing the junior senator’s candidacy. This would be a huge development. Adelson is the Republican Party’s biggest donor. He spent $100 million in 2012. If Adelson commits to Rubio, he could single-handedly neutralize Jeb Bush’s financial advantage.
‘Get Out’
The decline of America’s influence under Obama is accelerating. Fox News reports that “Russian diplomats sent an official demarche [a diplomatic demand] ordering U.S. planes out of Syria.” That demand was issued as Russia launched its first airstrikes in Syria following a unanimous vote by Russian lawmakers to approve President Vladimir Putin’s request for the use of force. Putin is going to war, and he’s telling America to get out of his way. How flexible will Obama be this time?
