Long before the blood was mopped up, before police issued the all-clear, before the motives of the shooters were known and the names of the dead were released, before you had any idea how the murderers in San Bernardino obtained their guns — or their bombs — you knew exactly what this story had to be about: gun control.

Three people were killed and nine were injured when Robert Lewis Dear opened fire at a Planned Parenthood center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. After capturing the shooter, the authorities resisted identifying a motive for Dear's attacks, because they didn't have one. Early reporting based on interviews with his recent neighbors in North Carolina turned up nothing. "If you talked to him, nothing with him was very cognitive," said neighbor James Russell to CBSNews.com. "Two topics Russell said he never heard Dear talk about were religion or abortion." The Washington Post found the same: "The neighbors said they never saw Dear with a gun, and they never heard him speak about politics or abortion rights."

After seven years of media adoration, President Obama was stunned and prickly. At a press conference in Antalya, Turkey, American reporters kept asking him why he was declaring his anti-ISIS strategy was working, when clearly it isn't. NBC's Chuck Todd found Obama "extremely defensive and almost not yet realizing that many of the reporters in that room, they're channeling the public in this case."

Last week, I wrote in this column that Dr. Ben Carson, a leading Republican candidate for the presidency, was an "American hero." I pronounced him thus even as the roof was falling in on his candidacy. Or was it? His numbers in the polls have held up. As the hullabaloo grew in the media, millions of dollars poured into his campaign from supporters all over the country. A week after it all began, the Carson campaign still appears formidable. Is his campaign really in trouble or has the crafty neurosurgeon-turned-presidential-candidate hit upon yet another tactic to win the election? Is he turning the maniacal nitpicking of the press to his political advantage?

The Politico headline was blunt: "Ben Carson Admits Fabricating West Point Scholarship." Except Carson made no such admission. He acknowledged never applying to West Point. But as a top ROTC student in Detroit, there's little question that had he wanted to go to West Point, he could've gotten in. Technically, West Point offers appointments, and the full tuition is paid for by taxpayers. But even West Point's own website uses the word "scholarship." In any case, Carson went to Yale, and, as such, could likely have gone to any school in the country.

The Media's Ignorance of American Religion
I seemingly must rewrite this every election season. As Ben Carson rises and the media is confronted by some mysterious something called a "Seventh Day Adventist," it is time again to explain American Protestantism to the press. It is amazing how the American mainstream media continues to write about American Christianity with complete ignorance regarding its basic terms, history, and beliefs.
CNBC Biased? You Don't Say!
Question: What did Reince Priebus not know about CNBC — and when did he not know it? Priebus, chair of the Republican National Committee, sanctioned CNBC's sponsorship of last week's debate. When during and after the debate many of the candidates blasted the moderators for their bias, Priebus said that the moderators created a "hostile environment" and "it was one 'gotcha' question, one personal low blow after the other."
Republicans vs. The Media
For years, I have been begging Republicans to stand up to the mainstream media. The left has dominated the media for as long as I've been alive. Yet Republicans have consistently granted leftists in media the patina of legitimacy: they've appeared on their programs, answered their questions without quibble, and allowed the audience to believe that the questions themselves spring from a place of objectivity rather than a desire to harm Republicans.
Long-Overdue Vigilance on Moderators
The competing Republicans presidential campaigns had a meeting on Nov. 1 to discuss their concerns with how the Republican National Committee had planned debates with the media. That's a healthy development, considering the CNBC debate, in which liberal journalists asked one too many deliberately snide and hostile "gotcha" questions attacking the GOP candidates, and the candidates exploded in anger.
The Delusional Conceit of Harwoodian Liberal Journos
So CNBC's John Harwood is not only unashamed of his disgracefully biased moderating of the GOP debate, he's doubling down — entrenched as a five-year-old boy guarding his Halloween candy. After the debate he tweeted, "GOP debate in 2015 enriched my understanding of challenges @SpeakerBoehner has faced and @RepPaulRyan will face." I assume he was not speaking complimentarily of these "challenges."
