Last week, an opinion piece appeared in The Washington Post that tells you much of what you need to know about the moral fabric and intellectual depth of the ACLU and much of the left. Written by Rana Elmir, deputy director of the Michigan chapter of the ACLU, the title says it all: "Stop asking me to condemn terrorists just because I'm Muslim."
How to Manufacture an Anti-Muslim Hate-Crime 'Epidemic'
Step one: Find an expert with an impressive-sounding academic title to legitimize shoddy advocacy propaganda. Meet Brian Levin. He's the one-man band behind something called the "Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism" at California State University, San Bernardino. The "center" (that is: Levin) claims to be "nonpartisan" and "objective." But he is a former top staffer of the militant, conservative-smearing Southern Poverty Law Center, which was forced to apologize earlier this year after including famed black neurosurgeon and GOP 2016 candidate Ben Carson on its "extremist watch list" of hate groups.
The New 'Gotcha' Question
The latest "gotcha" question that is really irritating me is a point being made by the left-wing media and talking heads. The purpose of the question is not to inform anyone, but to shutdown debate. It goes something like this: "You know there are more than 6,000 Muslims serving in the United States military. Don't you think they are patriots?"
Families of Terrorists See No Evil, Speak No Evil
Amid all the furor over Islamic terrorism in the United States, a few themes are ignored: the role of friends and family of terrorists, and how well the U.S had treated many of those who went on to kill Americans. Take, for example, the family members of Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook, who recently murdered 14 people and wounded 21 in San Bernardino before being killed by police. The New York Times recently contacted Malik's sister in Pakistan, Fehda Malik, who insisted that her sister was not an extremist, "She knew what was right and wrong," Fehda Malik said.
Pretend Answers on Terror
I wish I were as confident as many politicians and news commentators. They *know* what America should do about ISIS and terrorism. Donald Trump, who says he can feel terrorism "like I feel a good location ... I have an instinct for this kind of thing," says he would "bomb the s—" out of ISIS strongholds, ban Muslim immigration and shutter American mosques. America should "stop pussy-footing around!" according to Fox News host Jeanine Pirro. "Bomb them. Keep bombing them. Bomb them again and again. And I don't care how long it takes!"
We Aren't The World
To believe his critics, Donald Trump has ripped up the U.S. Constitution and sprinkled its shreds on the smoldering embers of what was once the Statute of Liberty. He did this, of course, by proposing a temporary ban on Muslim immigration into the United States, which might be the most roundly and fiercely denounced idea in America since the British Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts (in 1774). There is no doubt about it: Donald Trump's proposal is invidious; not all Muslims are a security risk. It is unworkable; among other things, airlines would have to screen travelers from Europe for their religion. It is imprudent; we don't want to send a message of generalized hostility to Muslims.
Farook's Friend
San Bernardino jihadist Syed Farook used two rifles in his murderous rampage that were purchased by a friend, Enrique Marquez. According to published reports, Marquez is expected to face charges in the ongoing investigation into last week's terrorist attack. As it turns out, Farook and Marquez are related by marriage, and Marquez told investigators that he and Farook had discussed plans for a terrorist attack in 2012.
Donald Trump May Be a Dangerous Buffoon, but He's No Hitler
"Is this what Germany looked like in 1933?" Joe Scarborough asked on "Morning Joe" this week. No. Not at all. Though many in my family were exterminated during the Holocaust — including one of my grandfathers, who died trying to make his way home from Mauthausen after years of forced labor — I'm not completely offended by an occasional gratuitous Nazi analogy. But as much as I hate to intrude on our week of national indignation, Donald Trump's idiotic, undoable and probably unconstitutional immigration proposal (if we can call it that) is not comparable to the genocide of 6 million Jews. Trump is not comparable to Adolf Hitler.
Why Take the Trump Stunt Seriously?
So how exactly does this work, Donald Trump's plan to keep America safe from Islamic terrorism by barring entry to all Muslims? He explained it Tuesday on TV. The immigration official will ask the foreigner if he's a Muslim. "And if they said, 'yes,' they would not be allowed in the country?" Trump: "That's correct." Brilliant. And very economical. That is, if you think that bloodthirsty terrorists...
President Obama's Umpteenth Tired, Dishonest Speech on Terrorism
Once again, President Obama emerged from his permanent sabbatical on the war on terror to inform us, in a bizarre address from the Oval Office, that he has things firmly under control and there's no need for us Americans to be concerned. Excuse me if I'm not comforted. Obama has made quite clear that he is blind to the threat that radical Islam represents to America and the rest of the civilized world. He obviously believes that Islam produces no more or worse terrorists than any other religion or cult and that it is wrong to focus on the radical strain of Islam because it leads to discrimination against other Muslims — discrimination he seems to see under every rock.
Too Little, Too Late
If you tuned in [Sunday] night to President Obama's Oval Office address expecting to hear something important, you were probably sorely disappointed. For those of you who missed it, here's my brief analysis. First of all, why was he standing, speaking from a podium, in the Oval Office? I was pondering that question and listening to his tone, which struck me as exasperated. He sounded like someone who just couldn't get the audience to calm down and listen to him. Then it occurred to me — he sounded like a professor lecturing a class. The president reiterated a constant theme of his administration, saying that we should not give in to fear. He misses the point. We are not afraid of radical Islam. We are afraid of the continued weak response to it.
Obama Speaks
President Obama addressed the nation yesterday to offer his thoughts about the San Bernardino massacre. I ignored his nonsense then, but here's what he had to say: "At this stage, we do not yet know why this terrible event occurred... We don't know why they did it. ... We do not know their motivations... It is possible that this was terrorist-related, but we don't know. It's also possible that this was workplace-related." That comment borders on willful deception. The efforts of big media and left-wing apologists for radical Islam to dismiss what our own eyes and ears tell us is infuriating.
'Nothing to Do With Islam'
In the aftermath of Paris and before San Bernardino, Hillary Clinton articulated the forced catechism of the left: "Let's be clear: Islam is not our adversary. Muslims are peaceful and tolerant people and have nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism." What happens when a major political party becomes so wedded to political correctness that it feels constrained to deny reality? Clinton could hardly have chosen a less opportune moment to squeeze her eyes shut about the threat of Islamic extremism, a threat that is glaringly, blazingly obvious.
Military Pros Split From Obama
White House aides were reaching for the Maalox [Tuesday] as their messaging strategy clearly went off the tracks. While Obama was in Paris this week marshaling world leaders to tackle the threat of climate change, his top defense chiefs were on Capitol Hill asserting that Islamic terrorism is a greater danger to our country. During a House Armed Services Committee hearing [Tuesday], Rep. Ryan Zinke, a retired Navy Seal commander, asked Secretary of Defense Ash Carter whether ISIS and other Islamic terrorist groups represented the most imminent and dangerous threat facing the country today.

The debate over whether Muslims in America celebrated during the 9/11 attacks continues. The Trump campaign [Tuesday] produced a New York Post column written by Professor Fred Siegel three days after the 9/11 attacks. (How is it that none of the fact checkers and media mavens could find it?)
Can We Learn From Europe?
Earlier this year, my column asked, "Will the West Defend Itself?" I pointed out that America's leftists and progressives believe that the U.S. should become more like Europe. I wonder whether they also want to import European policies that created barbaric extremism among its Muslim population. France's recent tragedy is not surprising, given some of its policies that are not widely publicized abroad. France has no-go zones, which are officially called "zones urbaines sensibles," or sensitive urban zones, where police are reluctant to go.
