Liberal Lawmaker Wonders Why People Need to Register to Vote

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) wants voting so easy that any efforts to prevent voter fraud are stripped away. “Now I also think we need to make voting easier,” he said at the U.S. Vote Foundation’s Voting and Elections Summit. “It should be easier. In other countries it’s easier. Why should voting be so difficult? Tuesday? Who thought that up? I mean the fact is, is that there’s wide variation in when people can vote. You can’t necessarily register to vote on Election Day. I’ve often asked myself why you should have to register to vote. Why shouldn’t it be automatic?” Because it matters in small, local races. Just ask Ohio’s Secretary of State, who told Congress 70 elections in his state were tied or decided by a single vote in the last 15 months.
