Lincoln Was Mistaken

When Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, after referring to the blood of the fallen soldiers having consecrated the ground of that Pennsylvania pasture, he concluded his brief remarks by saying that because of their ultimate sacrifice, "This nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that the government of the people, by the people and for the people, shall not perish from the earth." What Lincoln could not foresee was that a century and a half later, we the people would elect and then re-elect a despot who would usurp the role of Congress simply because it refused to do his bidding and would make a practice of ignoring all the constitutional limits on the executive branch with such regularity that even those who voted for him less than two years ago have begun to experience buyer's remorse. A recent poll has disclosed that if they could do it all over again, a sizable number of those who gave him another four years in 2012 now wish they had voted for Mitt Romney.

Nixon: Painfully Shy, but Craving Great Purpose

Perfect candor wasn't Richard Nixon's strong suit. But he spoke the gospel truth when he described himself as "an introvert in an extrovert's profession." He was one of the most successful political campaigners of the 20th century: winning election to both houses of Congress, serving two terms as Dwight Eisenhower's vice president, and twice winning the White House in his own right -- the second time by a 49-state landslide. Nixon spent decades in the public eye, and was indefatigable in pursuit of votes. Yet rarely has a politician seemed less suited for the political life. When he resigned the presidency, 40 years ago next week, everyone knew why he was ending his career in politics. But why did someone so solitary, so ill at ease with people, embark on that career in the first place?

Why is our recovery from the Great Recession so sluggish and so slow? Economists are increasingly focusing on Barack Obama's signature legislative accomplishment: the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as ObamaCare. In the past couple of weeks, as it is whenever Israel defends itself against those who would annihilate it, the world is afflicted by two groups of rabble-rousers. The second group are those so addled by a combination of historical ignorance and moral bankruptcy, they manage the impossible: they seemingly defend Israel's right to exist, even as they "sympathetically" align themselves with a terror group dedicated to its destruction. The former group is honest, albeit savagely so. The latter group is despicable, and has a far more familiar name: liberal Democrats.

This is the last regular *Patriot Post* column I am doing, because there is nothing else left to argue about. The simple fact is this: A test that can be evaluated objectively is underway. That test matches the ideas of people like me that nature is in control (i.e., sun, oceans, stochastic events) vs. the idea that CO2 is the control knob. We have the objective way at looking at it by satellite and that measure started in 1978 after the Pacific was in its cold cycle for 30 years. The game is now in the second half. The warming that occurred from the late 70s to mid 90s was correlated almost 1 to 1 with the Pacific warming, and this large body of water with tremendous stores of energy warming the air till the global atmosphere adapted, and the temperature rise leveled off. We could not observe nearly as accurately before similar events, we did not have the satellites to do so! The Pacific flipped into its warm cycle in 1978, for the first 30 years of satellite era temps, and is now turning cold. The Atlantic is in its warm cycle, but will soon turn colder. So we simply watch the global temperatures while the downside of the cycle occurs and see what they do.
