Cairo: One Year Later
One year ago this month, President Obama addressed the "Muslim world" from Cairo, Egypt. Some saw that speech as unnecessary groveling. Critics -- and I am among them -- think such displays communicate weakness and only encourage those who wish to damage our economy and kill our people. Supporters of the president's speech think he did the right thing and that his attempt to reduce tensions between the U.S. and Muslim world can only bring positive results.

May Day! May Day!
Cinco de Mayo has come and gone for another year, but the stench of political correctness lingers on. By this time, every liberal airhead from San Francisco’s Mayor Gavin Newsome to New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg has piled on Arizona’s Governor Brewer. And, although I may have misunderstood them, I’m pretty sure I heard President Obama and Attorney General Holder agree that a large fence should finally be built. Not at our southern border, however, but around Arizona.

California's Proposition Mush
WASHINGTON -- Under the current imperfect administration of the Universe, most new ideas are false, so most ideas for improvements make matters worse. Given California's parlous condition, making matters worse there requires ingenuity, but voters managed to do so last Tuesday. Actually, 8.9 percent of eligible voters did. By a margin of 54.2 percent to 45.8 percent, they passed Proposition 14, the Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act. Proponents outspent opponents 20-1. Of the approximately $4.6 million spent promoting the measure, $2 million came from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's political committee. He seems to consider this reform his defining achievement, which, in a sense, it is.

Ari Fleischer was press secretary to an American president, not to some commissar or caudillo, yet his reaction to Helen Thomas' latest anti-Israel outburst would have been more fit for a totalitarian than a free society. He demanded that Hearst fire its White House correspondent, who'd probably been there longer than most of the furniture.
