Honoring Those Who Serve
Yesterday many families hit the beach, had picnics and enjoyed the traditional start of summer fun. Sadly, many never mentioned the reason for the holiday: To honor those who have fallen while defending our right to enjoy each day of our lives as we wish — as Americans. This generation of children and teenagers are in serious need of heroes. Surveys reveal that they often confuse pop stars and sports figures with true heroes - the people who sacrifice on behalf of someone else. If you forgot to truly celebrate Memorial Day, it's not too late to explain the difference to your children, and to finally discuss and honor those who fought so we might be free.

Oxymorons and Non-Oxy Morons
Liberals like to use “military intelligence” and “compassionate conservatives” as prime examples of oxymorons, but I think better ones are “civil servants” and “tolerant liberals”. Best of all, though, is a friend’s contribution, “Larry King Live”. If there’s one form of animal life that irritates me even more than gophers, rattlesnakes and run-of-the-mill socialists like Henry Waxman and Barney Frank, it’s so-called Republicans like John McCain and Lindsey Graham who are convinced that the more they reach across the aisle and the less partisan they are in their politics, the more statesmanlike they’ll appear.

The Old Lady in Black
The most vivid memories aren't those carved in stone but the ones etched in the mind. Memory deepens with the years, the way a river carves through rock, slowly revealing new layers, creating canyons. Sometimes the river overflows its banks. And you tear up. Maybe on an anniversary, or when you hear a certain song, or for no discernible reason at all. And it all comes back. On this Memorial Day weekend, I think of the old lady in black. She was a fixture of my childhood, never speaking, but always there in one of the little shops up the street just a few doors from our own.
