What I Said to the Republican Members of Congress
This past weekend, after President Obama addressed the annual retreat of Republican Members of the House, I, along with my Salem Radio colleague Hugh Hewitt, and John Fund of the Wall Street Journal, were also invited to address them. This is an abridged and edited version of my remarks.
Has Obama Moved Center on Nuclear Power?
The perennially optimistic strained to find evidence of a new centrism in President Obama's State of the Union address. Well, the Hyde Park liberal embraced nuclear power, they say. And he did seem to. " ... To create more ... clean energy jobs," the president intoned, "we need more production, more efficiency, more incentives. And that means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country." It's a nice sentiment. The Nuclear Energy Institute pronounced itself "delighted." But hold the champagne.

Obama Impresses 'Educated Class' but Not Terrorists
Just whom are we trying to impress? That's a question that occurred to me when, on his second full day in the presidency, Barack Obama announced we would close the Guantanamo detainee facility within one year. It's a question that has kept occurring to me over the last year and nine days, even though Obama and his administration have proven unable to keep that promise. Whom are we trying to impress by ruling out enhanced interrogation techniques on unlawful combatants, techniques that produced valuable intelligence that saved American lives? Whom are we trying to impress by limiting questioning to the Army Field Manual?
Debunking Liberalism and Islam
Recently, a conservative I know suggested that it would be great if all the liberals packed up and moved to, say, France. Although I happen to have a few liberal friends and I would surely miss them, I certainly endorse and second his motion.

So Much Wasted Green for Climate Change Talks
It was bad enough last month watching Washington politicians merrily flying off to the U.N. climate change Conference of Parties in Copenhagen (or COP-15 for short), ostensibly to draft a global warming treaty, when all the players knew that no meaningful pact would result and that the only sure outcome was that much energy would be squandered. Now comes the sticker shock.

Principal Obama's Lessons for America
WASHINGTON -- The most revealing congressional reaction following President Obama's State of the Union address came from Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina: "He sort of took us to the principal's office, didn't he?" And not just Congress, but all of us. The nation's principal was calm but firm. Democrats were scolded for their resemblance to frightened rabbits. Republicans were reprimanded for obstructionism and betraying their responsibility to govern. Washington was rebuked for its partisanship and pettiness. The Supreme Court was taken to task for favoring special interests. The American people were praised for their resilience, and gently chided for their cynicism and misunderstanding of policy. Everyone was left with a pat on the head, a lesson or a detention.
