The New York Times has just published an article claiming that global warming is (partly) to blame for the spread of various "tropical" diseases to the U.S. and other areas where previously they had been eradicated or had never existed. Donald G. McNeil Jr. begins his article titled "U.S. Becomes More Vulnerable to Tropical Diseases Like Zika" thus: "Tropical diseases — some of them never before seen in the United States — are marching northward as climate change lets mosquitoes and ticks expand their ranges."

Legacy or Bust
Last Saturday, Barack Obama gained the second jewel in his foreign policy triple crown: the Paris climate accord. It follows his Iran nuclear deal and awaits but the closing of Guantanamo to complete his glittering legacy. To be sure, Obama will not be submitting the climate agreement for Senate ratification. It would have no chance of passing — as with the Iranian nuclear deal, also never submitted for the Senate ratification Obama knew he'd never get. And if he does close Guantánamo, it will be in defiance of overwhelming bipartisan congressional opposition.
A Climate Deal Worth a Small Degree of Success
Figuring out what to make of the climate change talks recently held in Paris isn't as easy as you might think. Talk about a confusing atmosphere. There was the positive: The Paris deal "establishes the enduring framework the world needs to solve the climate crisis," President Obama said. "I believe this moment can be a turning point for the world." U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called it "a monumental success for the planet and its people."
Another False 'Turning Point' on Climate
History, on the "right side" of which Barack Obama endeavors to keep us, has a sense of whimsy. Proof of which is something happening this week: Britain's last deep-pit coal mine is closing, a small event pertinent to an enormous event, the Industrial Revolution, which was ignited by British coal. The mine closure should not, however, occasion cartwheels by the climate's saviors, fresh from their Paris achievement. The mine is primarily a casualty of declining coal prices, a result of burgeoning world energy supplies. Thanks largely to the developing world, demand for coal is expected to increase for at least another quarter-century.
Climate Make-Believe in Paris
Saving the planet has never been so easy. The Paris climate talks concluded in a rousing round of self-congratulation over an agreement that, we are told, is the first step toward keeping Earth habitable. If generating headlines and press releases about making history were the metric for anything, Paris might be as consequential — if misbegotten — as advertised.

We have been told by the Obama administration that climate change is leading to a drought that is destabilizing the Middle East. This is another straw man argument that completely ignores the natural cycle of the Atlantic Ocean. When the Atlantic Multidecadol Oscillation, a completely natural and relatively predictable large scale ocean oscillation, is in its cold phase, as it was from 1961-1995, there is more rain in Turkey and Syria (left picture below). When it's in its warm phase, as we have seen since '95, it gets dry. This is one of the more astounding comparisons you will ever see — an almost perfect correlation.
