A Red Herring in Virginia
Voters are fickle and often don't pay much attention to races besides the top ones, like president and governor. That must be why Virginians narrowly elected Mark Herring state attorney general two years ago. A majority of people apparently didn't think it mattered a lot who held the office. Were they wrong! A couple of weeks ago Herring decided he would no longer recognize concealed carry permits from 25 other states. Roughly 6.3 million people currently allowed to carry weapons — and thus protect themselves and others — will be disqualified. Half of the states in the union will see Virginia as an inconsistent partner and some law-abiding gun owners denied the right of self-defense might not visit the state, costing it tourism dollars.

Obama's Gun Order Triggers Outrage
The media's focus may have been on the president's tears during his gun control speech, but it should have been on the cries of freedom-loving Americans. After seven years of watching the administration wipe its feet on the Constitution, this latest power grab epitomizes everything people have come to resent about the White House. This week, the president's impersonation of the legislative branch got personal with the announcement of a four-point plan to curb one of the country's most important rights: to keep and bear arms.

In Gun Sales, Whose Hands Are Wrong?
The new gun controls that President Obama announced on Tuesday include a "clarification" of who is "engaged in the business of selling firearms," the upshot of which is that more gun buyers will be subject to background checks. Obama describes expanding the background check requirement (which Congress has declined to do) as a "commonsense gun safety reform" aimed at "keeping guns out of the wrong hands."

How to Protect Your Family & Business From Islamic Jihadists
Risk. It's something we all live with. Risk is simply a degree of danger or loss that we face, whether known or unknown, and we face it every day. If we're smart, we seek to manage that risk, both personally and professionally, but it's always there. We purchase insurance to protect our assets. In business we hire risk managers. We lock our doors. We wear a seatbelt when driving. We check the air in our tires. There is no end to the things we do to mitigate our risk of loss or injury.

Less gun control, not more, was the legislative result.
Denying Rights to Combat Terrorism?
Pretty savvy political theater in the push for gun control.

Autonomous Terrorism Calls for Autonomous Defense
There is not much the government can do about the sort of terrorist threat that President Obama described in his speech on Sunday. It will always be difficult to stop self-radicalized jihadists, operating under no one's instructions, from carrying out attacks on soft targets too scattered and numerous to secure. The only viable alternative, self-help, is one that Obama seems ideologically incapable of considering. His proposals for new restrictions on firearms move in the opposite direction, based on the assumption that the problem is too many guns in too many hands.
