“We should be unfaithful to ourselves if we should ever lose sight of the danger to our liberties if anything partial or extraneous should infect the purity of our free, fair, virtuous, and independent elections.” —John Adams (1797)

Over the last 50 years, I have witnessed some interesting political cycles. The result of that succession of election swings is the rise of some leftist candidates in the upcoming midterm elections, the likes of which we have never seen before.

How did we get here? There is actually a swinging political pendulum lineage from decades ago to this election. Turns out that Newton’s Third Law of Motion — for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction — applies to politics.

That lineage started with a wide swing from Left to Right after the tumultuous 1960s, when voters attempted to right the nation by electing Richard Nixon (R-CA) in 1968. Notably, Nixon was reelected in 1972 by a historic landslide, winning 60.7% of the popular vote and every state but Massachusetts and the District of Columbia — for a total of 520 electoral votes. I note this because Nixon was running against then-leftist George McGovern (D-SD), who by today’s Demo standards would be a moderate. Nixon even won McGovern’s home state of South Dakota.

That landslide victory was followed by the Watergate setup and Nixon’s resignation, then by the first election in which I cast a vote — the 1976 Carter-Ford contest, in which Jimmy Carter managed to narrowly win the popular vote by 50.1%. That resulted in a strange election map compared with those today, with the Southeast states (except Virginia) and with the Democrat-dominated Northeast states colored blue. Meanwhile, every Left Coast state was red.

Yes, there was a time when California, Oregon, and Washington voted Republican. California voted for Republican presidential candidates until 1992, and Republican governors held the state from 1983-2011 with one exception. How times have changed...

(By the way, I have always held that “red” was a more fitting color for Democrat Party socialists, but in 1976 NBC decided to color election maps blue for Democrats, and the MSM herd followed.)

Fortunately for America, the Carter malaise was followed by two terms under the 20th century’s greatest president, Ronald Reagan, who restored America’s standing as an economic powerhouse and Beacon of Liberty as a world power. Notably, Reagan won reelection in 1984 by the biggest electoral landslide in history, with 525 of the 538 electoral votes going his way. Walter Mondale’s participation trophy was the 10 electoral votes from his home state of Minnesota and the three votes from the hopelessly leftist District of Columbia.

I held an appointment in President Reagan’s second administration and had the privilege of meeting its principals and seeing it operate from the inside. His “peace through strength” strategy ended the Cold War and the Soviet Union’s reign of tyranny and terror. Unfortunately, 35 years later — enabled by a succession of feckless Democrat presidents — Russia remains under a sociopathic dictator, Vladimir Putin.

George H.W. Bush squandered much of the Reagan legacy, giving rise to Bill Clinton in 1992. It was Clinton’s reelection in 1996 that inspired us to launch The Patriot Post, to provide an online alternative to the dominant Leftmedia news outlets that had a stranglehold on public opinion. We just observed our 30th anniversary and remain the oldest news digest on the Web.

However, the most distressing election of my lifetime was that of a largely unknown outlier, a dangerously clever and charismatic socialist, Barack Obama, in 2008 — and again in 2012. That lurch to the left was followed by an equally “unusual” candidate who promised to Make America Great Again, Donald Trump.

In 2020, in a hard swing back to the left, Obama’s lapdog, the corrupt and senile Joe Biden, managed, thanks to the Demos’ massive bulk-mail ballot fraud strategy, to defeat Trump. (For the record, the Nixon-era Watergate break-in was a minor infraction compared to the deep-state coup conspiracy against Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020.)

Then, in 2024, Trump pulled off the biggest comeback in presidential history, and another swing back to the right.

Those swings, those equal-and-opposite reactions since 2008 — Obama to Trump to Biden to Trump — have created the most strident political climate of my lifetime. And with such stridency have emerged some truly dangerous candidates in the midterm elections two weeks from now, who may deliver Democrat majorities in the House and Senate.

The most alarming of those candidates is Abdul El-Sayed (D-MI), whose ideology, despite his denials, is aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America and the radical Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group. His lies about his allegiance to the latter have been ignored by the MSM.

Political analyst Josh Hammer rightly declares that El-Sayed “is running as the most thinly veiled Trojan horse in American political history — on behalf of the Brotherhood and the Islamism it embodies.”

To that end, Ben Shapiro concludes: “Abdul El-Sayed is very offended that people are asking him about the Muslim Brotherhood. He is less offended by the Muslim Brotherhood, with whom he is intimately tied, despite his obvious lies.”

El-Sayed is very much from the Obama radical mold, a slick and charismatic nobody from nowhere on a meteoric rise with the help of extremists like Hasan Piker et al., and now his biggest fangirl, the far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

AOC is now the high-profile darling of young Gen N: The Narcissist Generation of voters. Defying reality checks, she is considered a contender in the 2028 presidential election behind Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom (D-CA), and she is putting her big mouth and money behind El-Sayed’s effort to defeat Republican Mike Rogers for Michigan’s open Senate seat.

Ocasio-Cortez just transferred a million dollars from her campaign account to El-Sayed and insists, “Once you elect one person like that, people will then catch on, and we will start electing more people like that.”

Did you catch that? “Once you elect one person like [El-Sayed], people will then catch on, and we will start electing more people like [El-Sayed].”

Consider the fact that, against conventional political wisdom, Islamist America-hater Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was elected in nearby Minnesota in the 2018 midterms, the same year AOC was elected. Despite the fact that Omar is now under investigation for lying about her citizenship, if she can reach Congress, so can El-Sayed.

And the leftist Senate lineup of midterm lunatics extends beyond Michigan.

Among the strangest of those new entries is Texas oddball James Talarico, who is running against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Talarico, whose ideology is, despite his denials, like El-Sayed’s — also aligned with the DSA — rose to power in the 2018 midterms when elected to the Texas State House. He’s another slick Obama-type nobody from nowhere, often promoting his twisted brand of mystic Christianity in stump speeches, when not completely disappearing from the campaign trail as he did for nine days recently.

This leftist cleric defends gender mutilation of children and abortion in the name of some nonbinary deity he worships.

Democrats in Maine had the opportunity to get rid of their nutcase Senate candidate Graham Platner ahead of the midterms, but his replacement, Troy Jackson, is little more than a duller, more dim-witted version of Platner.

But the fact that El-Sayed and Talarico have made it to big state Senate tickets and, in some cases, are leading in the polls against their Republican opponents is shocking. Have the Demo voters in those states been dumbed down to that miserable a level of political deprivation?

Will Trump’s whirlwind campaign stops move the needle in favor of House and Senate Republicans?

The fact is, the Trump administration’s successful efforts to Make America Great Again after the economic debacle left by Joe Biden have been remarkable. The economy is strong; core inflation, at 2.6%, is the lowest in five years; and income is up, poverty is down, and jobs are plentiful.

But the combination of Trump Derangement Syndrome motivating voters on the Left and Trump Fatigue Syndrome dissuading some voters on the Right is a problem.

The good news about the midterms is that, despite the Demo/Leftmedia pollaganda effect — using polls as propaganda to prop up candidate support — most polls underrepresent Republican voters.

Now, if Republicans will only get out and vote!

Finally, it would be disgraceful if in this year of our nation’s 250th anniversary of American Liberty, Congress was turned over to such anti-American radicals.

But, as old Ben Franklin said at the close of the Constitutional Convention, we have “A Republic... if you can keep it.”
