On Monday World Vision announced a policy change that would have allowed the organization to employ homosexuals. The decision, however, was met with tremendous backlash, prompting the organization to drop the change. “The board acknowledged they made a mistake and chose to revert to our longstanding conduct policy requiring sexual abstinence for all single employees and faithfulness within the Biblical covenant of marriage between a man and a woman,” they wrote following the reversal. FRC’s Tony Perkins responded that, while the Christian family “welcome[s] World Vision back with open arms,” and that “[it]t takes a lot of courage in this culture to own up to a mistake of this magnitude and apologize,” the problem now comes down to one of trust. “Unfortunately for the organization, even short-term failings can have long-term consequences,” says Perkins. “To [Christians], it’s not an issue of forgiveness – but trust.” That said, this is a good reminder for Christian leaders to refocus on Biblical principles: “In many ways, this is a teachable moment for the entire Christian community – and an opportunity to every ministry, pastor, church, and spiritual leader to refocus themselves on the transcended truth of God’s word.”
