Feds Lied, Babies Died
Oh, but it’s for “the greater good.”
In an experiment that echoes the notorious Tuskegee syphilis experiment, the Department of Health and Human Services studied the effects of varying amounts of oxygen on premature babies. In all, the government manipulated the oxygen levels of 1,316 premature infants from 2005 to 2009, according to The Daily Signal’s Sharyl Attkisson. Parents of the children now say the government lied to them. In some instances, children died. Other children in the study live with health problems from getting too much or too little oxygen. Dr. Michael Carome, an expert on research ethics with the group Public Citizen, said, “The word ‘unethical’ doesn’t even begin to describe the egregious and shocking deficiencies in the informed-consent process for this study. Parents of the infants who were enrolled in this study were misled about its purpose. They were misled to believe everything being done was in the ‘standard of care’ and therefore posed no predictable risk to the babies.” More…
