Something Wrong in America
At Monday’s funeral for Michael Brown, Al Sharpton said something else that caught our attention: “There’s something wrong, that we have money to give military equipment to police forces when we don’t have money for … public education.” We too have expressed concern over the militarization of police, though more money is spent today on public education to less effect than ever before, so Sharpton’s comparison isn’t a good one. But beyond that, there is indeed something wrong in America. In Chicago over the weekend, 42 people were shot, with six dead, including two teenagers and two men killed by police for having drawn weapons on them. Sharpton was silent. Attorney General Eric Holder was silent. Joe Biden did head to Chicago Monday, but it was for a fundraiser for Gov. Pat Quinn and to tout the minimum wage with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Yes, there is something wrong in America.
