Missouri Senator: Ferguson ‘Race War’
Maria Chappelle-Nadal, a Missouri state senator, said the aftermath of the Michael Brown shooting is a race war. “I have to tell you, this is St. Louis’ race war,” she said emotionally on MSNBC as images of fire and riot flashed beside her. “We didn’t have a race war like other cities throughout the country. This is our race war. … I know of people in my own party, in my own government structure, who disregard things that we say and how we feel. And we are not going to allow it anymore.” What does she mean by “race war”? If she’s talking about the riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., she’s right that the violence in St. Louis was less than, say, Chicago or Washington DC. And in this war, who is the enemy?
