IN and IL’s Economic Feud Turning to a WWE Smackdown
For a Republican, the Illinois governor sure doesn’t understand everything about free market economics. In a recent interview with the Chicago Tribute, he talked like a pro wrestler about his state’s eastern neighbor. “I am going to try to rip the economic guts out of Indiana,” Gov. Bruce Rauner said. “I am one of the baddest enemies anybody can have. We’re actually going to get it done. When I set a goal we do it. And we’re coming after Indiana big time. We’re going to deliver jobs out of Indiana and into Illinois.” Economics is not a zero sum game. Illinois’ gain doesn’t have to be Indiana’s loss, even though the two states have been economically sparring for years. Furthermore, if there’s only so much wealth to go around — as Rauner assumes — it’s only logical for big government to try to manage it all. Instead, Rauner should focus crafting policy to encourage building companies in his own state, as innovation only grows wealth. More…
