Man Returns Hero Wife’s ‘Women of the Year’ Award

His wife’s a hero. Bruce Jenner isn’t.

On September 11, 2001, Officer Moira Smith paid the ultimate sacrifice, becoming the New York Police Department’s sole female casualty. The Chicago Tribune says, “After the 9/11 attacks, no one disputed that Moira Smith was a hero. The 38-year-old police officer led over a hundred bleeding people out of the World Trade Center, one after another, until the building collapsed and buried her beneath its rubble.” A hero indeed. Glamour Magazine awarded Mrs. Smith “Women of the Year” — an appropriate gesture, to be sure. But according to the Tribune, that award is no longer welcome: “The distinction was retroactively declined last week — by Smith’s husband.” And we can hardly blame him. James Smith, also a member of the NYPD, explained to Glamour Magazine Editor in Chief Cyndi Lieve, “I was shocked and saddened to learn that Glamour has just named Bruce Jenner ‘Woman of the Year.’ Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man?” James continued, “I can only guess that this was a publicity stunt meant to resuscitate a dying medium. After discussing this slap in the face to the memory of our Hero with my family, I have decided to return Moira’s award to Glamour magazine.” Smith was given the award because she was completely selfless. Jenner won because he (an important disclaimer) was entirely selfish. If Glamour can’t distinguish the two, perhaps it should get out of the award business.
