Chuck Schumer’s Olympic Pander
Olympians should be thanked, not billed by the IRS, he says.
“It’s time to be patriotic … time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.” That was Joe Biden back in 2008, and he was talking about how paying taxes is “patriotic.”
That’s also the typical Democrat line for those who need to “pay their fair share.” So it was awfully surprising to hear soon-to-be Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer arguing just the opposite — that because people were patriotic, they should not be met with a “bill from the IRS.”
“Our Olympian and Paralympic athletes should be worried about breaking world records, not breaking the bank, when they earn a medal,” Schumer said in a statement in support of a bill that would relieve Olympic athletes from taxes on their cash prizes. “Most countries subsidize their athletes; the very least we can do is make sure our athletes don’t get hit with a tax bill for winning. After a successful and hard fought victory, it’s just not right for the U.S. to welcome these athletes home with a tax on that victory.”
If only Democrats had an attitude even remotely similar when it comes to the rest of us who work hard and “win” at what we do to put food on the table.
