As everyone knows, Donald Trump’s favorability ratings aren’t exactly stellar. The Washington Post was proud to emphasize as much just days before his swearing-in ceremony. In a new email news alert, the Post trumpeted the president-elect’s dismal ratings, declaring, “Trump will take the oath of office as the least-popular president in at least four decades, according to a Post-ABC poll.” The poll pegs Trump’s favorability ratings at just 40% compared to 54% who view him unfavorably. These are considerably lower than recent past presidents. For what it’s worth, the Real Clear Politics average from Dec. 6 to Jan. 10 shows Trump’s favorability at 42.7% (48.7% unfavorable).

Trump, at least in part, has only himself to blame for his performance ratings, courtesy of some of his more unorthodox antics. But here’s where the Post unknowingly berates itself. The Post, of course, was a strong proponent of Hillary Clinton. Interestingly, however, her favorability numbers are nowhere to be found throughout the piece. Fortunately, our friends at Real Clear Politics have the data, and in the days leading up to the Nov. 8 election (Oct. 28 - Nov. 7) Clinton’s favorability rating averaged 41.8%, with 54.4% viewing her unfavorably. Trump and Clinton were two of the least liked candidates to win their respective party’s nominations. But make no mistake: If Clinton were the one taking the oath of office this weekend, we’d bet big bucks the Post wouldn’t be deriding her equally dismal ratings, making her “the least-popular president in at least four decades.”
