Diversity or Demo Division?
E Pluribus unum? The belief that we are a unified people is going by the wayside.
During a rally in Houston earlier this week, President Donald Trump confessed “you know what I am? I am a nationalist, okay? I’m a nationalist.”
Years ago, the president calling himself a nationalist wouldn’t have even made page A19 in the paper. But the media responded with vitriol, accusing the president of racism and blowing a dog whistle to other white supremacists. He’s Hitler, they cried. The same media pressured the president to clarify his remarks at the White House a day later.
The Latin phrase e pluribus unum, meaning as Mark Alexander has clarified, “out of many, one,” in reference to the unity of the original 13 colonies into statehood after 1776 — it’s printed on our currency, emblazoned our buildings, and firmly placed in our history. But today the belief that we are a unified people is going by the wayside. And it’s happening faster than you might think or want to believe.
The idea that we are one nation, united by our beliefs and values, is now rejected by millions of Americans who worship diversity and see a nation divided into adversarial identity groups as a strength. But how can a country made up of different groups remain together?
As Edward J. Erler, professor emeritus of political science at California State University, San Bernardino, notes, “Greater diversity means inevitably that we have less in common, and the more we encourage diversity the less we honor the common good. Any honest and clear-sighted observer should be able to see that diversity is a solvent that dissolves the unity and cohesiveness of a nation.”
In a mere 50 years, we’ve gone from a nation of one out of many to many out of one.
Of course, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t respect and celebrate the cultural and ethnic characteristics we inherit from others, but in the end there has to be a foundation upon which our society rests. The problem is that the Left wants to “celebrate” our differences by destroying the foundation of our society while claiming to be tolerant and compassionate.
Erler adds, “Diversity, of course, marches under the banner of tolerance, but is a bastion of intolerance. It enforces its ideological liberalism with an iron fist that is driven by political correctness, the most ingenious (and insidious) device for suppressing freedom of speech and political dissent ever invented.”
Diversity is being waged by the Left as a two-front war designed to upend our civilization from within. The first front began with leftist professors espousing anti-American rhetoric in universities, but it’s now spreading like wildfire into our cities, towns, and communities. You’d be hard pressed to find a K-12 school or university in America that doesn’t promote the leftist idea of diversity.
Heather Mac Donald, author of The Diversity Delusion, [states] in an interview at The Daily Signal (https://www.dailysignal.com/2018/09/28/how-diversity-ideology-killed-the-university-and-is-infecting-america/) that a student who walks onto an American university campus “is told to think of himself in one of three categories: He’s either the oppressed, the oppressor, or, if he shows sufficient enlightenment and he’s one of the oppressors, he can move himself out of the oppressor category into the ally category.”
In today’s incendiary environment, if you’re not an ally of the Left then you’re the enemy.
The second front in this war of division is to flood our country with tens of millions of people from so many different cultures who have no desire to become American or to adapt our values or beliefs. The desire of progressives to throw our borders wide open goes far beyond their claim to be compassionate, even beyond the fact that they see every new illegal alien as a Democrat voter.
The ultimate goal is to divide Americans into splinter groups, each forming alliances with other members in the group while abandoning the ideas and principles that have bound us together for more than two centuries. Any suggestion that immigrants assimilate or become part of the melting pot is derided as inherently racist. In the short term, Democrats will be empowered at the ballot box. In the long term, Democrats will pander to various groups and play them against one another in order to maintain their power.
This is the ideology that the Left continues to use to divide and conquer.
In the end, we will turn on one another. Conditioned to care more for our group instead of the nation, we will become further divided. That’s the leftist vision of diversity.
