To Tame the Beast

“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” –Cornelius Tacitus

A great misunderstanding among the American People is the notion that their “Bill of Rights” either guarantees or somehow bestows “Rights” upon them. Neither could be further from the truth and this misunderstanding will be the Peoples downfall. The “Rights” of the American People are not unique to them but rather are the Natural Unalienable Rights of all People by virtue of their birth as a human being. It is the nature of all governments to restrict and in some cases eliminate the Natural Rights of the People. There can be no governance otherwise. When the assumption is, as it was for the Founders of the United States of America, that a Divine Creator bestows unalienable rights upon all men equally then a “Bill of Rights ” would seem unnecessary. Yet, as practicable People the Founders knew that without restraint those “Rights” would be soon restricted or eliminated by those that would govern with a heavy hand. The preamble, yes there is a preamble, to the Bill of Rights states:

“The Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.”

“In order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added” is a powerful statement to the intent of The Bill of Rights. This distrust of government abuse of power was extended in the 10th Amendment the last in the Bill of Rights. It reads, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Thus the entire intent of the Bill of Rights is not to endow the American People with “Rights”, those rights existed long before the adoption of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights but to restrict the power of a central federal government and force that government to protect and respect the Natural Unalienable Rights of all People in the all the states. So, every time Congress debates or the President proposes new legislation that because of the very nature of legislation restricts or eliminates any Natural Right of the People they violate the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. General Douglas MacArthur described the method used in his time and still used today by the American politician as they emote their rationality for such legislation.

“Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear - kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervour - with the cry of grave national emergency. Always, there has been some terrible evil at home, or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it by furnishing the exorbitant sums demanded. Yet, in retrospect, these disasters seem never to have happened, seem never to have been quite real.”

And so here We the People stand so many years later in yet another state of fear that must be addressed lest We fall to the criminality or insanity of a secular society that has lost its way. Give up your Rights and we will protect you is the rallying cry of the secular progressive. Never mind that once the restriction on government power is now gone more and more Rights will be usurped in order to expand that power. That is the nature of the beast. Perhaps one of Our least remembered Presidents said it best.

“Our government rests upon religion. It is from that source that we derive our reverence for truth and justice, for equality and liberality, and for the rights of mankind. Unless the people believe in these principles they cannot believe in our government. There are only two main theories of government in our world. One rests on righteousness and the other on force. One appeals to reason, and the other appeals to the sword. One is exemplified in the republic, the other is represented by despotism.

The government of a country never gets ahead of the religion of a country. There is no way by which we can substitute the authority of law for the virtue of man. Of course we endeavor to restrain the vicious, and furnish a fair degree of security and protection by legislation and police control, but the real reform which society in these days is seeking will come as a result of our religious convictions, or they will not come at all. Peace, justice, humanity, charity – these cannot be legislated into being. They are the result of divine grace.” –Calvin Coolidge

We are certainly even more today in need of Divine Grace if We are to tame the beast gobbling up the Peoples Rights.
