Nature’s Nausea
“God is dead.” -Nietzsche
“Nietzsche is dead.” -God
We begin today’s commentary with a news alert:
“[Secretary of State John] Kerry painted a picture of looming drought and famine, massive floods and deadly storms as a result of global warming, and he urged ordinary citizens in developing nations to speak out on the issue and demand more from their political leaders. He labeled those who denied the evidence of climate change as ”shoddy scientists and extreme ideologues….‘The science is unequivocal, and those who refuse to believe it are simply burying their heads in the sand,“ Kerry said. "President Obama and I both believe we don’t have time for a meeting anywhere of the Flat Earth Society.’” (Washington Post, Feb 16, 2014, emphasis added)
Those of us who are not card carrying Darwinists finally have something in common with our beleaguered brethren.
The earth is responding to humanity.
That’s it. It’s all we have in common.
Just as looking at artistic drawings in caves leads some to conclude that early men dragged their knuckles, clubbed their women and yanked them home by the hair, when it comes to understanding modern catastrophes, looking at evidence with white coats and furrowed brows doesn’t guarantee valid conclusions nor effective proscriptions.
But it still takes faith. And the choice, as it has always been, is clear.
Faith in the Power Worshippers – the elite tower climbers who, from their vaunted political & social viewpoint, deem themselves society’s saviors. Power Worshippers put their trust only in the things they can hold between their teeth or control with their edicts. They view the cataclysmic natural and social upheavals as an opportunity for greater wealth and control. Faith in their prescription – more government control – can only lead to loss for you and me.
Or in the Faith of our Fathers.
Our Fathers believed in timeless and universal truth. They believed in a Benevolent Creator. They believed that a free society would only work for a moral and educated people.
Of Morality let me speak. When a society kills its offspring in the name of anything. When it abandons timeless truth and universally held standards of right and wrong especially in regard to the family. When it practices, applauds and promotes unspeakable sexual deviancy. When it uses law as the instrument of plunder rewarding indolence and coveting…
Then is it unreasonable to consider these events dire warnings from God?
Warnings made to the people of Israel, long been held captive by an oppressive Egyptian monarchy, as they contended with the difficulties of forming a civil society, are just as relevant today:
“Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these things, for by all these the nations I am driving out before you have become unclean, and the land became unclean, so that I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. But you shall keep my statutes and my rules and do none of these abominations, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you (for the people of the land, who were before you, did all of these abominations, so that the land became unclean), lest the land vomit you out when you make it unclean, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.” Leviticus 18:24-28
If “futurists” (the high priests of the Power Worshippers) believe that, with the right nanotechnology and algorithms, nature’s will can be bent by (I’m not making this up) casting incantations:
“These tales may be imaginary, but they are not unreasonable visions of our world as it will exist only a few decades from now. Essentially all of the [Harry] Potter "magic” will be realized through the technologies I will explore in this book. Playing quid-ditch and transforming people and objects into other forms will be feasible in full-immersion virtual-reality environments, as well as in real reality, using nanoscale devices.“ –Ray Kurzweil, The Singularity Is Near, from the prologue.
Is it far-fetched to believe that God’s universal laws were designed, not to be manipulated for our entertainment, but to be held in awe, with humble gratitude and loving obedience, in protecting mankind from his own folly?
Today we contend with the difficulty of keeping society civil and freedom from oppression. How much more the difficulty when nature itself contends against us!
The singular prescription that is as old as the first violation of God’s Perfect Will: Repentance! Repentance, a casting away of the evil in us, that leads to obedience. Obedience that leads to blessing and healing.
The choice couldn’t be any clearer. But keep another timeless truth in mind: there are more of us then them. Pity the beleaguered brethren…who have no king but Caesar.
