President Obama: Build. Up. This. Wall.
As we enter the last few months of 2014, the world looks completely different than it did at the start of this year. A killer virus is sweeping through Africa, and has now been confirmed in America and Spain. A terrorist organization named ISIS is roaring through the Middle East, and right now no one is stopping them. All these things have one thing in common: they threaten America through the southern border. Whether it’s through a terrorist attack, or a disease with no widely available cure, our country is in more danger now than ever before. Yet, despite these terrifying times, our President, and Congress, refuse to take meaningful action to secure our southern border. Everyday, hundreds if not thousands of illegal immigrants, and who knows whom else, infiltrate our country, and no one in Washington seems to care.
On Tuesday, the airwaves were rocked with a congressman’s report that 10 ISIS fighters were captured trying to infiltrate our southern border. If this claim is true, this is a terrifying concept. Given our obviously wonderful border security (over 15 million illegals in America and counting), it’s a guaranteed fact that those 10 are only a small fraction of the fighters either attempting to get in, or worse actually getting in.
Despite increasing warnings from his military advisors, Obama is continuing to kick the immigration can down the road. Instead of seeing thousands of dead Americans because of his incompetence, all Obama sees is the potential to lose the Senate to Republicans. Then again, he didn’t listened to his military advisors when it might have prevented this mess, so why start now?
Our “security” failed us. Ebola managed to get into the United States. Granted, so far it’s only been one case and the CDC claims it managed to contain it before more people were infected, but it’s only a matter of time before another infected person gets in. Our security at airports is supposedly top notch, but they still managed to miss someone. The security at our southern border is atrocious. How long before people with Ebola start just wandering into America?
This scenario seems unlikely as of right now, but we all know it’s only a matter of time. Ebola is known to travel like a brushfire through countries with sub-par living conditions and medical care. Mexico fits this bill perfectly. It won’t be long before Ebola is racing through Mexico, and people with Ebola are entering this country illegally trying to escape the epidemic.
Instead of waiting for this “doomsday scenario” to happen, President Obama and congress should preempt this danger by taking action now. We don’t need to wait until the demons are at our gates, we can (for once) stop a disaster. The question is, will we?
These aren’t crises that would affect one or two people. These are crises that have the potential to claim thousands of lives and drastically alter our country. The debate over securing our border shouldn’t exist in the first place. It’s common sense. In these dangerous times, we can’t afford to have a fictitious line in the sand that no one pays attention to and no one monitors. We’re talking about real American lives on the line. One person has already died from Ebola. Others have had their heads chopped off in the name of radical Islam. Do we really need more examples before we act upon these threats? We should have learned from history that we can’t afford to sit around and wait for tragedy to strike our homeland before we are forced into action. We don’t need more images of buildings in flames. We don’t need more blaring headlines about thousands dead in a matter of hours. We need action, we need it now.
We know that we need action against these threats. We need to start demanding action from those we call our “leaders”. Right now we are faced with a decision that will echo down through the ages. We can choose to defend ourselves, or we choose to sit back and let darkness come cover us. Generations of Americans will read about this moment in history. What will they read? Will they read about a population that once again sat by as the gates of hell opened up and did nothing? Or will they read about a people who courageously stood as one nation before the worst could throw at them, and prevailed. Make no mistake, America will prevail. We are the greatest force for good this world has ever seen.
Ronald Reagan, a man who understood what America must do to defend freedom and protect the world, said it best:
“But freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream.
"The only way they can inherit the freedom we have known is if we fight for it, protect it, defend it and then hand it to them with the well thought lessons of how they in their lifetime must do the same.
"And if you and I don’t do this, then you and I may well spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.”
