A Voter’s Prayer
“Our Father, who art in Heaven -
Make us mindful today of our country’s foundational belief in a benevolent Creator who gave us a resource rich world for our care and cultivation to benefit and bless others. To live faith filled lives and not fear-based lives cowering to the rich and powerful.
"Hallowed be Thy Name -
Remind us that our obligation to You is to be like You: to help and heal and save. In honoring You we live a life of faith toward our fellow man believing in their intrinsic capacity to be good; a goodness not derived by government edict, but through the disciplines of life.
"Thy Kingdom come -
May we conduct ourselves by your Kingdom values of Righteousness, Truth and Love and select representatives who will guide this great country by those values. Let us remember that each election is a referendum on We The People, that our elected officials reflect our values. If we are a coveting, lustful, envious, adulterous, factious, deceptive people, will not our leaders share those traits? If we fall short in your character, restore us O God!
"Thy Will be done -
We thank you that we have woven into our national fabric men & women of divine faith who from their knees recognized that when in our darkest hours it was not whose side was right and who was wrong, but rather what is Your Will. They knew that the best thing about Your will is You are there! Your will is for freedom, liberty and Life. Help us find and support candidates who are made of the same stuff!
"On Earth as it is in Heaven -
Thank you that you treat us as individuals of whom you will hold us accountable for the things we do on this earth. You will reward goodness done in your name and by your power. You will punish evil done in any name.
"Give us this day our daily bread -
May we remember that everything we have comes from you and know that happiness comes from wanting what we have. Deliver us from envy and coveting this day. Deliver us from thinking that we can meet our needs by plundering our neighbors goods; of electing false leaders with false motives who promise to redistribute property in the name of fairness.
"Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us -
Restore to us a healthy fear of sin and a commitment to become better. Deliver us from false shepherds who use the sins of the past to manipulate and polarize the people. Love never fails and urges us to reach our potential in our humanity by learning from our mistakes and trusting in one another to do the same.
"And lead us not into temptation -
We acknowledge that it is tempting to listen to the alluring sound of class envy and wealth redistribution; of false accusations of theft, exploitation, racism, colonialism, of our inability to order our own lives aright. Help us remember there is always grace available from you to conquer those things in our own lives and help our fellows make progress in their own. But let us be wise enough to realize that wolves in sheep’s clothing will always be among us to exploit false guilt into their own political power.
"But deliver us from evil -
We’ve been regarded as a great people, not because of a particular race, education or ideology, but because we were good. Humble and restore a love for truth and goodness to us and the discernment to know good from evil.
"Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.”
