Reconquista?

For decades, an invasion of our former Republic has been taking place, with millions of people flooding in, mostly from Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Both our supposedly separate political parties have worked to increase legal immigration and turn a blind eye to the illegals. The large corporations and the Chamber of Commerce, who support the Republicans, want abundant cheap labor. The Democrats want voters beholden to them. Neither party seems to care that the invaders take jobs from Americans, depress wages, heavily impact our schools and medical facilities, receive a variety of benefits paid for by American taxpayers (and by fiat money and borrowed money), commit much of the crime in our country, and fill our prisons (at our expense). Obama has practically emasculated the Border Patrol, sold guns to Mexican drug cartels, brought in “children” with a variety of deadly diseases and secretly shipped them to undisclosed locations all over the US, and released thousands of illegal aliens, who, in addition to the crime of entering our country uninvited, committed other felonies, even murders. He refuses to deport the invaders, and is now planning to grant (in effect) amnesty to many of them. Not to be outdone, leftist mayors have declared their cities to be “sanctuaries,” and some governors give in state tuition to aliens (but not to Americans from other states), and driver’s licenses to people who cannot even read our road signs. Anyone who opposes this madness is shouted down and labeled a “racist,” the one-size-fits-all designated conversation stopper used by leftists to avoid a real debate they cannot win.

Immigrants in the past usually came here for political and/or religious freedom or for opportunity, but wished to learn English and become Americans. Their descendants are Americans first and Jews or Irish, Italian, or Chinese second. But most of the current wave profess nothing but contempt for our Constitution and for most of us citizens. And immigrants from Mexico wave the Mexican flag, celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and call for “Reconquista” of the territories the US took from Mexico in the Mexican War. Many belong to radical hate groups like La Raza, which means “The Race.” Imagine the reaction of government, the elite media, and academia if a group of White Americans formed a group opposing immigration and called it “The Race.” Some claim that they wish to establish a new country in what is now the Southwest United States and call it “Aztlan,” after the supposed homeland of the Aztecs. Indeed, the Aztecs, as evidenced by their language as well as their legends, may originally have come from this region. The Aztecs, remember, were the nation responsible for mass murder and human sacrifice on a scale rivaling the Nazis and Communists of the last century. And most of the immigrants, even the ones from Mexico, are not descended from Aztecs.

Aside from the fact that mostly Hispanic illegals are overrunning our entire country, not just the Southwest, do they really have a legitimate claim? Did we really steal a vast tract of land from the Mexican people? The answer to that question is anything but simple.

To begin to answer the question, we need to examine the Mexican War of 4/25/1846 to 2/2/1848, and the “prehistory” of that war – the Texas War for Independence, which ended on 5/14/1836 with the signing of the Treaty of Velasco, which established the Rio Grande (a.k.a. the Rio Bravo del Norte) as the boundary between Mexico and the Republic of Texas. The Texas War for Independence began after General Santa Anna became dictator of Mexico, and it is often forgotten today that it was not merely a battle between Anglo “Texians,” as they were then known, and Mexicans. Many of the Tejanos, the Mexicans living in Texas, opposed Santa Anna’s tyranny and joined with the Anglos; very few supported the dictator; and most could care less. Tejanos played a role in the government of the Republic of Texas, with several of them being elected to high office.

When Texas, at the request of the Texans, was annexed by the US, the American government as well as the new state government continued to regard the Rio Grande as the border with Mexico, since that was stipulated by the Treaty of Velasco. Yet, in an incredible act of folly, the Mexicans, insisting that the Nueces River (well to the east of the Rio Grande)was the border, sent troops across the Rio Grande, a move regarded by Americans as an invasion. And, since the US government coveted California and adjacent areas, the invasion provided the perfect excuse for a counter-invasion. The Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, giving these vast territories to America, and the US paid Mexico $15 million and assumed a further $3.25 million of Mexican government debt owed to US citizens.

As for the poor, innocent Mexican citizens whose land we supposedly stole, the overwhelming majority lost nothing. They stayed where they were, continuing to own their own homes and businesses, farms, and ranches. They became American citizens and most are far better off than most Mexicans living in Mexico.

So there is no “Reconquista.” How could there be, when most of the invaders never lived in the US, nor did their ancestors? It is an invasion, pure and simple, a violation of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, aided and abetted by the Mexican government – and by our own.
