‘Believe All Women’ Democrats Are Only Dropping Platner Because He’s Going to Lose
This was always about power, is about power and will always be about power.
It seems like only yesterday that we were in the midst of #MeToo, with Democrats coming from every direction with the demand that we “believe all women.” What started as a hugely important movement of women (and men) speaking out against sexual assault and sexual harassment had quickly become a free-for-all in which spurious and unsubstantiated allegations were wielded as not much more than political weapons.
But then the next thing came alone (Black Lives Matter) and the thing after that (“Free Palestine”), and we were supposed to forget the sporadic concern for victims of sexual assault that had disappeared from Washington, D.C., as fast as it had appeared.
But thanks to the fountain of human excrement that is Graham Platner, the modern Democratic Party has reminded us of the truth.
For months, we have been told that Platner is just a swell guy. When news broke of his Totenkopf Nazi death’s head tattoo, we were informed that Platner had (just) covered it up, and that it was an honest mistake by a self-professed military history buff. And honestly, who hasn’t had one too many beers and stumbled into a Croatian tattoo parlor, flicked through the catalog and accidentally picked a Nazi emblem? It was either that or a unicorn!
When Platner’s sordid social media history came out, it was a big nothing burger. When it looked like he was spending time scrolling on a dating platform beloved by sexual predators, we saw nothing but shrugs. When he was accused of being abusive by a former girlfriend, the story was dismissed as a political hit job on a husband, a veteran and a lover of oysters by a Republican.
Scandal after scandal, Democrats stood by Platner, and the endorsements kept rolling in… until he was accused of rape. Suddenly, everything changed. Suddenly, the phone wasn’t ringing off the hook. Suddenly, every single one of Platner’s friends was calling on him to step aside, including his avid campaigners Rep. Ro Khanna and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Even Donna Brazile tweeted that it was time for Platner to “step aside” and that he “needs time to heal, focus on his family and well-being.” Because when it comes to accusations of rape, we all know that the alleged rapist is the real victim.
But that still doesn’t answer the question “Why now?” How could the same Democrats who had endorsed Platner despite having a Nazi tattoo, despite his online history that made Anthony Weiner seem like Mitt Romney and despite allegations of being the worst boyfriend ever?
Of course, many have noticed that his latest accuser is a progressive woman. And yes, this is certainly one variable. But the real reason? Platner is probably going to lose in November.
That’s what really matters here. Frankly, that’s all that ever matters. This was always about power, is about power and will always be about power. If Democrats believed that Platner could still deliver a U.S. Senate seat in November, they’d be by his side, enthusiastic as ever before, frantically painting him as a progressive warrior who simply must be placed in Congress, no matter the cost.
