Would Stopping Iran’s Bomb Make Us ‘Complicit?’

Team Obama is desperate to shore up support for their man in the American Jewish community. They are so desperate, in fact, that they are showing Israeli President Shimon Peres’ video to their convention delegates in Charlotte, N.C. Israel’s president is a largely ceremonial office, lacking real power. But Peres is Israel’s most famous dove. Like Mr. Obama, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Like Mr. Obama, many people today ask: Where’s the Peace? Mr. Peres tells convention goers that Barack Obama is “the best president for Israel.”

That’s an amazing statement. Only four percent of Israelis think Mr. Obama is a friend of Israel. Our president has gone out of his way to avoid visiting Israel. He visited all around Israel during his famous apology tours.

He took pains to ingratiate himself with Islamists in the region. He bowed to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah. He addressed the Turkish parliament, a majority of whose deputies are pushing Turkey away from its secular and democratic past and toward Islamism.

Mr. Obama spoke at Al Azhar University in Egypt. There, he referred to the Koran as “holy” and said the Islam had been “revealed.” Al Azhar is a notorious nest of Muslim Brotherhood activity. Soon after President Obama spoke there, Muslim Brotherhood activists helped to topple the thirty-year rule of Hosni Mubarak. Mubarak was no friend of Israel, either, but at least he maintained a “Cold Peace” along the Egyptian-Israeli border. No more.

The new Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt is headed by Mohamed Morsi. Morsi is being welcomed in Washington. Here, he is expected to lobby for more U.S. aid. He is pledged to press President Obama to release the blind Egyptian sheikh, Omar Abdel-Rahman. The “cleric” is serving a life sentence for masterminding the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993.

To reward Egypt’s new Islamist government – which persecutes Christians, which seethes with hatred of the Jews, and which turns a blind eye to the oppression of women – the Obama administration is now giving an additional $1 billion in debt forgiveness. They call this democracy.

The Obama administration is notorious for having publicly protested when Israelis tried to build more apartments for Jews in Jerusalem, their capital city. The Obama administration does not recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, for starters. Second, Mr. Obama chose to deliver his sharp condemnation of Israel from Jakarta, Indonesia. Mr. Obama holds up Indonesia as a model of Muslim moderation. It is true that Jews are not persecuted in Indonesia. That’s because they are not allowed to live there.

So, while leading Democrats and Israel’s doves are cooing in Charlotte, a top U.S. General is growling. Gen. Martin Dempsey is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He wants Israel to give Iran more time. He says the U.S. will not be drawn into a conflict with Iran.

Gen. Dempsey told Britain’s left wing Manchester Guardian, “I don’t want to be complicit if [Israel] choose[s] to do it.”

Complicit? That word means the general does not want the U.S. to be party to a crime. Does Gen. Dempsey speak for the Obama administration? Does the Obama administration really think that stopping the Iranian mullahs from developing a nuclear weapon would be a criminal act?

Surely, the general misspoke. There must be some paid apologist at the State Department racing for the microphones to say: “Gen. Dempsey does not speak for the administration on complicity.”

The silence is deafening. No wonder the Israelis are saying Gen. Dempsey’s “were definitely not to our liking.” Now, that’s diplomatic.

When the Iranians are breathing murderous threats, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaking from Tehran publicly calls Israel “a two-bomb country,” the idea that stopping them in time is something for which we want to avoid “complicity” is totally unacceptable.

It should give pause to all those delegates sitting in Charlotte and being spoon-fed pabulum about President Obama’s pro-Israel stance. He is undoubtedly the most anti-Israel president in our lifetime.
