Pelosi’s Grand Stand

Nancy Pelosi went to the House floor Wednesday and spoke for eight hours demanding better treatment for our veterans. Oh, wait, that wasn’t the subject.

Nancy Pelosi went to the House floor Wednesday and spoke for eight hours demanding better treatment for our veterans. Oh, wait, that wasn’t the subject.

She spoke for eight hours about the need to rebuild our inner cities, improve schools in minority neighborhoods and support the president’s infrastructure plan. No, not those issues either.

She talked all day about the urgent need to defend religious liberty at home and Christian persecution overseas? Nope.

No, Nancy Pelosi broke records with her historic grandstanding by demanding amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are willing to shut down the government and inconvenience American citizens in order to ensure that millions of illegal immigrants and (they hope) future Democrat voters are allowed to remain in the country. That is the issue that compelled Nancy Pelosi to make history.

Just another reminder of the Left’s priorities.

Betraying the Dream

One of the saddest things I saw during Pelosi’s marathon speech was when she was brought to tears talking about her young grandson’s birthday party. According to Pelosi, after her grandson blew out the candles on his cake, he said he wished for “brown skin and brown eyes like Antonio,” his friend from Guatemala.

While Pelosi was deeply moved that her grandson wanted to look like a friend, I found her story troubling. It is sad that her grandson wanted to have brown skin, and it would be sad if Antonio wanted to have white skin.

I thought the whole purpose of the Civil Rights movement was to move beyond the color of our skin and to focus instead on the content of our character. The Left’s obsession with skin color is betraying Reverend Martin Luther King’s dream of a truly colorblind society.

Pelosi should borrow some wisdom from an old song that Christian parents of all races used to sing to their children: “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Red, brown … black and white, they are precious in His sight.”

That song introduced children not only to the love of God but also to the profound idea that all human beings have potential, dignity and worth because they have been made in the image of God.

Well, I suppose there is no reason to worry too much. Given the Left’s eager embrace of cultural chaos, Pelosi’s grandson can choose to be a Guatemalan woman if he wants to!

About That Deal

Late Wednesday, Senate leaders announced a deal to avoid a government shutdown. While it includes a desperately needed boost to defense spending, it came with a big price.

The Left refused to increase defense spending a single dollar unless domestic spending was also increased. Many House conservatives are furious. One lamented that fiscal hawks may be “an endangered species."

But here’s the bigger point: This deal once again demonstrates the Left’s misplaced priorities.

Providing for the national defense is the number one priority of government. But as Schumer proved last month and as Pelosi proved Wednesday, it’s not the Left’s number one priority.

Now, here’s some good news: DACA, or amnesty for some illegal immigrants, was not part of the deal, and that is a win for conservatives. Apparently, Sen. Schumer did not want to see ”#SchumerShutdown" going viral again.

National Prayer Breakfast

Thursday morning, President Trump addressed the 66th annual National Prayer Breakfast. He gave a great speech about the importance of faith and religious freedom. But before I share a few excerpts of his remarks with you, here’s how The Washington Post described it:

“President Trump delivered a God-and-country infused speech Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast, appealing to Americans who believe in Christian nationalism — the belief that God has a uniquely Christian purpose for the United States.”

Frankly, I’m not familiar with the term “Christian nationalism.” It’s not in my every day vocabulary. At the Post, which never misses an opportunity to bash Trump, any form of nationalism must be a bad thing.

Having said that, the notion that God had a uniquely Christian purpose for our country pretty well sums up the views of our Founding Fathers, and we know how our media elites feel about them.

Speaking of our Founders, the president honored them in his remarks, underscoring America’s deep religious heritage. He said:

Each year, this event reminds us that faith is central to American life and to liberty. Our founders invoked our Creator four times in the Declaration of Independence. Our currency declares, “In God We Trust.” And we place our hands on our hearts as we recite the Pledge of Allegiance and proclaim we are “One Nation Under God.”

Our rights are not given to us by man; our rights come from our Creator… That is why the words “Praise be to God” are etched atop the Washington Monument, and those same words are etched into the hearts of our people.

So today, we praise God for how truly blessed we are to be American… Throughout our history, we see the story of God’s providence… We see the Lord’s grace in the service members who risk their lives for our freedom. We see it in the teachers who work tirelessly for their students, and the police who sacrifice for our communities — and sacrifice they do.

And we see the Lord’s grace in the moms and dads who work two and three jobs to give their children the chance for a better and much more prosperous and happier life.

What a tribute to faith, family and freedom! If you missed the president’s remarks, I encourage you to watch them here.

Another speaker at Thursday morning’s prayer breakfast was Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. Unfortunately for him, Wentz was unable to play in the Super Bowl due to an injury. But the Eagles have a deep bench of faith.

Nick Foles, the backup quarterback who lead the team to victory in Super Bowl LII, is planning to become a pastor. When asked for his reaction to their upset win Sunday, Coach Doug Pederson didn’t hesitate, saying, “I can only give the praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

In fact, several players have even been baptized in the team’s recovery pool and on the road in hotel pools.
