Fired FBI Director James Comey testified Friday before a joint session of the House Judiciary and Government Reform and Oversight Committees.  Members of Congress were hoping to get answers from Comey about the FBI’s handling of the investigations into the Clinton email scandal and Russia’s election meddling.

Unfortunately, they didn’t get much in the way of new details.  It seems Mr. Comey couldn’t recall a whole lot.  Here’s what Rep. Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said about Comey’s testimony:

“The biggest takeaway is that former FBI Director James Comey, with regard to the two most important investigations … into the Clinton email matter and into the Russia collusion matter, said ‘I don’t recall,’ ‘I don’t remember’ or ‘I don’t know’ 245 times.”

If Mueller’s team interviewed someone in the course of its never-ending collusion investigation and that individual uttered those weasely phrases that many times, Mueller would likely consider the individual a hostile witness. 

And it goes to what’s wrong with this whole mess.  Without the Mueller investigation we know that the one clear party that was colluding with Russians was the Clinton campaign.  We also know that the Obama Administration weaponized the national intelligence apparatus of this country in order to spy on the Trump campaign.

The Unhinged Left

While some liberal leaders in Congress are coy about discussing impeachment, it is clear that others intend to remove President Trump from office.  Moreover, the unhinged left-wing base, including the liberal media, is demanding it.  Just consider some of these comments from the weekend.

• On Face the Nation Sunday, Rep. Adam Schiff, the incoming chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said, “[Trump] may be the first president in quite some time to face the real prospect of jail time.”

• MSNBC’s Lawrence O'Donnell declared, “Donald Trump will be, must be impeached because of the crimes prosecutors say he committed in the Michael Cohen case."  (More on that below.)

• Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein told CNN, "It certainly looks like they are the kind of offenses that would call for impeachment hearings into the conduct of the president of the United States.”

• #NeverTrumper Jennifer Rubin, described as a “conservative Washington Post columnist,” predicted that Donald Trump would resign so that Mike Pence could become president and pardon him.

• Rep. Jerry Nadler, the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said on CNN, “… the president was at the center of a massive fraud, several massive frauds against the American people.  It’s now our job … to get to the bottom of this … so we can hold him accountable.”

We have said from the beginning that the Mueller investigation is an attempted coup by elements of the Deep State and the DC political establishment with the pretense of a legal process.  It is similar to the attempted coup in Great Britain where the political establishment there is attempting to overturn the Brexit vote.

Unlike the Clinton impeachment, when the media were cheerleading for the president, the chattering class is all in on forcing Donald Trump from office. 

Is This It?

So what is the left obsessing over now in its efforts to overturn the 2016 election results?  It’s not Russian collusion. 

We’re back to whether Trump misused campaign funds in signing non-disclosure agreements with two women.  Campaign finance experts have serious doubts about the president’s legal jeopardy here.  As former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy explains:

“There is nothing illegal per se in making a non-disclosure agreement; they are quite common. The criminal law comes into play only if the non-disclosure payment is deemed a donation for purposes of influencing a political campaign.”

As McCarthy also noted, campaign finance violations rarely result in jail time:

“In marked contrast, though, when it was discovered that Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign was guilty of violations involving nearly $2 million – an amount that dwarfs the $280,000 in Cohen’s case – the Obama Justice Department decided not to prosecute.  Instead, the matter was quietly disposed of by a $375,000 fine by the Federal Election Commission.”

And the failure of the Justice Department to convict former North Carolina Senator John Edwards on similar charges strongly suggests that the case is not the slam dunk many in the media believe it is. 

Unfortunately, we have seen cases of political prosecutions before, like when the Obama Administration attempted to send Dinesh D'Souza to jail for reimbursing political donations.
