The Coronavirus Pandemic Will Never Defeat the U.S.

By Kimberly Guilfoyle

We haven’t defeated the coronavirus quite yet, but the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter every day.

As eager as we all are to get back to normal life — this is a presidential election year, after all, and this particular election is the most significant in our lifetimes — the shift to “virtual campaigning” has produced some exciting innovations that are allowing us to connect with women all over the country and give them a platform to discuss their personal experiences during the pandemic and their appreciation for President Trump’s leadership and support.

Of course, the first thing on everyone’s mind after their health and that of their loved ones is when we can get our economy out of this state of suspended animation. Everyone knows this will be a drawn-out process and that the pace will vary according to conditions in different parts of the country.

In consultation with the experts on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, President Trump issued a set of guidelines to help states and localities navigate the various phases of reopening. Now, states all over the country are already beginning to meet the criteria for lifting their lockdown restrictions, and some states are beginning the initial stages of reemergence.

We can’t ignore the fact that many Americans are using their First Amendment rights to let their elected officials know about the frustrations and hardships they’re experiencing after weeks of quarantine. This is largely in reaction to one-size-fits-all policies in some states where large rural areas have very few cases of COVID-19 to justify very harsh restrictions like areas that have a high number of cases.

The media are maligning these peaceful protesters in a way they would never do to left-wing activists with radical demands. It’s important to have a fair and rational discussion of the protests — when the people speak, our elected officials should never forget that it’s their job to listen.

So long as most of the country remains in lockdown, however, it’s also crucial to know how you and your family can get your share of the economic relief provided by President Trump to help Americans survive this crisis. The CARES Act has provided hundreds of billions of dollars in direct aid to families and small businesses. In addition to relief payments worth $3,400 for a typical family of four, the legislation created the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) — a massive relief program for small businesses that has proven so popular that President Trump signed into law additional funding of $310 billion.

Also, the president recently issued an executive order that temporarily suspends the issuance of new green cards for permanent residents, which will prevent foreigners from competing with American citizens for jobs as our economy begins to return to normal. There is no argument, moral or economic, for importing foreign workers at a time when 30 million Americans will need a job — most will return to their prior positions, but some will be struggling to find one.

Events like the recent EMPOWER Hour I cohosted with three brilliant and entertaining women — Madison Gesiotto, Katrina Campins, and Dr. Gina Loudon — are a great way to inform our supporters about these developments and emphasize our collective conviction that we’re going to make it through this. We’ll eventually get back on the road to appear at the in-person campaign events that we love.

As exciting as that sounds, it’s even more exciting to think of the millions of Americans who will be able to get back to work and return to normalcy at the same time.
