The Serenity Prayer

I think a great many people should take a deep breath right now, say the prayer and then carry on in a post-Trumpian America.

I have never belonged to Alcoholics Anonymous, but I have known several people whose lives were saved because the organization exists.

I have always believed that the Serenity Prayer the members repeat at all their meetings makes a tremendous amount of sense, and even before I had ever heard it, I believe it summed up my philosophy: “God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.”

I think a great many people should take a deep breath right now, say the prayer and then carry on in a post-Trumpian America.

I’m not saying it will be easy. But a lot easier than spending the next four years, banging our heads against the wall, bellyaching and plotting a revolution.

I would only remind them that the people they’ll be shooting won’t be the British redcoats, the Nazis or the Islamic devils; it will be their friends, neighbors, children and grandkids. The only revolution that ever improved things were our own, and I personally don’t like the odds.

Of all the stupid things I’ve seen the Democrats do over the years, this second impeachment of Donald Trump just might be the stupidest. Although it has to go some to be dumber than the one last year.

People have theorized about Nancy Pelosi’s motivation. But I think Rep. Jim Clyburn, one of the bigger ignoramuses in the Congressional Black Caucus, let the proverbial cat out of the proverbial bag when he said: “Donald Trump has to be stopped so that he’d never hold office again.” And towards that end, Clyburn has suggested they wait until after Biden’s first 100 days in office so they can devote their full attention to driving a silver spike through Trump’s heart.

In what I assume is Speaker Pelosi’s attempt to sanitize Rep. Eric Swalwell’s tattered reputation, she appointed him as one of the nine House managers of the impeachment. That must have his Chinese mistress Fang Fang giggling back in Beijing.

When it comes to immigration, the question is whether President Biden will tear down Trump’s 400 miles of wall or will simply have 1000 portals built. He has said, after all, that “Illegal immigration is a gift.”

Apparently, he meant a gift to us when, in reality, it’s been a gift to Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, who have been only too happy to wave good-bye to their gangs, their drug dealers, their sex traffickers and their terminally unemployed.

I know that voters are famous for their short memories, but if you need to, keep a list of these following names taped to the wall. With any luck at all, you’ll only need to keep it around until November, 2022. That’s when you’ll have the opportunity to vote Anthony Gonzalez (Ohio), Jamie Herrera-Beutler (Washington), John Katko (New York), Adam Kinzinger (Illinois), Peter Meijer (Michigan), Dan Newhouse (Washington), Tom Rice (South Carolina, Fred Upton (Michigan), David Valadao (California) and Liz Cheney (Wyoming), out of the House.

Those were the 10 Republican turncoats who, with a week to go in Trump’s term. joined with the Democrats to vote articles of impeachment against the President.

They all said it was a matter of principle. Any time a politician tells you he’s motived by principle you know he’s lying, which means these 10 creeps believe their vote will work to their political advantage. God help us if they’re right.

One of the brightest moments in Trump’s political career came the evening of the House vote when in a taped address, the President called for an end to violence, for the Washington vandals to be arrested and tried and for something to be done about Silicon Valley oligarchs setting themselves up as the arbiters of what news is covered and what news isn’t in this country.

As I have said in the past, I would hand over permanent control of the House to the Democrats if it meant we could have an honest media in America. But I now realize that will never be. One might as well ask that carob taste like chocolate, that George Soros pledge allegiance to the United States or that Nancy Pelosi stop waving her hands around when she speaks.

I grudgingly accept that even if President Trump had run an ideal campaign he would have been cheated out of his victory, but I sure wish he had at least put up a better fight….and not after the fact, when all it did was put him and Republicans in a bad light.

As I look back over his four years in office, I only have two distinct images of the man. The first was his signing bills with a flourish that would have done John Hancock proud. The second was his addressing crowds of zealots chanting “U.S.A.” or “Four more years!”

And while I approved of both messages, I don’t like hearing chanting. It reminds me of the stuff that Leftists do when they have some mug with a megaphone and a line of picketing teachers or a mob of BLM and Antifa mooks marching around.

I also don’t like the sound of booing that Trump always encouraged when at his rallies he’d call attention to the fake media at the rear of the arena. Most of the folks being booed were cameramen who were just doing their job. The real enemies – Rachel Maddow, Laurence O'Donnell, Don Lemon – were all back at the studio.

I assume there were people in Trump’s inner circle who recognized what the 2018 election meant when they saw white suburban women handing the House back to Nancy Pelosi. In spite of a booming economy, victory over ISIS and a president who was standing up to China, they didn’t like him. They regarded him as coarse and boorish and unpresidential. You and I can dismiss them as silly, but their votes count as much as yours and mine.

They were wives and mothers and they wanted to see a man they could like and respect, someone perhaps like their husbands and fathers.

Why did we never see him interact with his youngest son? Do they not get along? And does Barron dress every day in a suit and tie?

Why did they have to keep Barron under wraps that way? Were they afraid he wouldn’t grow up to be a normal kid if he appeared in White House photos with his dad?

That train has left the depot a long time ago. For God’s sake, the kid moved from a building with his last name on it and golden fixtures in the bathroom to the White House.

His father is a billionaire/TV star/president of the United States, and his mother is a former supermodel/First Lady.

In four years, we never saw the father and son bowl a frame on the White House alley or even have a meal together.

For the life of me, why did Donald Trump never visit sick kids in a hospital or old folks in a nursing home? Speaking of which, why did he never condemn Andrew Cuomo for sending people infected with the Chinese virus into old age facilities?

The senators have certainly been a lot more incensed over their place of business being attacked by white vandals than they ever were when it was other people’s businesses that were being burned and looted by black vandals.

Aside from who was being victimized by the two groups, the major difference is that BLM was acting up over a fantasy called racial bias by the police, whereas the people in Washington were upset over the reality of a rigged election.

If future historians are more honest than the ones currently to be found in academia, they will ponder how it is that one president is impeached over a phone call to the president of Ukraine and over a mob busting up furniture and putting their feet on Nancy Pelosi’s desk, whereas nobody threw a flag when a former president airmailed $1.7 billion to a rogue nation that had gone from kidnapping Americans to killing them over the course of four decades.

Since I’d only be guessing, if there’s an expert out there, please let me know if pollster Frank Luntz is sporting the best or worst toupee in America.

When I look around and see how inflamed the Democrats are with Donald Trump even as he was turning off the lights and leaving the key under the mat for Biden, I find myself wondering if they’re carrying on this way, what would it have been like if Trump had been re-elected?

All together now: God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.
