Liberty and American Exceptionalism
On the Fourth of July, we don’t only celebrate the birth of our nation. We celebrate American exceptionalism—everything that makes the United States the greatest nation on earth. In celebrating this, we reject President Obama’s blueprint for the kind of country he seeks to make us. On July 4, 1776, fifty-six dedicated patriots resolved to risk everything in the hope of a new beginning. Elected to represent colonists from across the thirteen British colonies on the American continent, they decided to embark upon a grand experiment, to form a self-governing democratic republic.

Obama Plays Election-Year Politics on Immigration
"Years before the statue was built," Barack Obama began the peroration of his July 1 speech on immigration, Emma Lazarus "imagined what it could mean." Actually, the French sculptor Bartholdi was at work on the Statue of Liberty before Lazarus published her famous "give me your tired" poem in 1883. (The statue was assembled in New York Harbor two years later and dedicated in 1886.) The speech itself was similarly misleading. Obama, as he so often does, told us we must start "being honest about the problem and getting past the false debates that divide the country rather than bring it together." But even as presenting a fair description of some immigration issues, Obama got in some false debating of his own.

Why Climb To The Top?
The world recently marveled at the fact Justin Romero, a 13-year-old boy from California, had just become the youngest person to ever climb Mount Everest. But now there is wild condemnation of a 16-year-old girl who just failed in her attempt to circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat. I – for one -- I just don’t get it. I’m on record in applauding Abby Sunderland’s attempt, as well as her daring rescue in the stormy Indian Ocean after a savage wave snapped her boat’s mast and left her adrift – and alone -- for three days. You see, I know something about “the top of the hill.”
A Nobody Angling for a Knockout
LAS VEGAS -- Sometimes provocative people become that way because they were provoked. Sharron Angle, 60, could be enjoying the 10 grandchildren she loves even more than her .44 magnum. Instead, she is the Republican nominee against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's quest for a fifth term. Her campaign began, in a sense, three decades ago, when a judge annoyed her.

I Used to Love America More
I love America, but honesty compels me to admit I used to love it even more. I loved it more when people could admit they were patriots without being called xenophobes. I loved it more when a person could say that nobody should be allowed to sneak into the country without being labeled a racist. I loved it more when one could point out that if people aren’t allowed to profit from a crime, why are the parents of so-called anchor babies the exception?
